I’ve made some good progress over the past year and a half after joining a local gym and watching my diet. I’m around 200 lbs now and find myself getting bored with doing the same weight machines. I’d also like to make sure I’m working all my upper body muscle groups.

Here’s what I currently do for weights about 3-4 times per week:

  • Shoulder press machine
  • Inclined bench press machine
  • Arm curl machine
  • Pec deck machine
  • Lat pull down machine
  • Ab crunch machine

One thing I’ve considered is moving to more natural methods such as a regular bench press.

I like simple and that’s one reason I’ve been using the machines. Any recommendations on how to improve my workouts? I’m looking for stuff that’s simple and straightforward and uses weights. Nothing fancy or hard to remember that requires a calendar schedule.

I also do cardio by running on the treadmill for 15 minutes and using the rowing machine for 12 minutes, but I’m happy with that.

Thanks.

By the way, one reason I’m posting is that my boredom is beginning to affect my dedication to diet and getting workouts in.

My goal is to get down to 180 lbs, lose more body fat, and look “toned”. It seems I’ve recently become “stuck” at 200.

Thanks. I’m not as interested in specifically targeting my legs as those already get quite a workout when rowing/running.

I’ve been pretty happy with my lower body. That’s partially because I’ve always had “bulkier” legs. I’ve generally considered my upper body to be my weak point. That’s why I was looking for some ideas as outlined in my original post. I wouldn’t mind doing a full body exercise that exercises multiple muscle groups, but am not really one to jump on the leg press or do targeted calf curls. That might change once I lose more weight, but right now, at least from a visual perspective, I really don’t have any complaints.

Thanks, banthafodder. I’ll take that into consideration. I did soccer in high school and my legs felt like tree trunks. But I had a puny upper body.

I started with the bench press tonight (need to figure out this kg to lbs stuff) and will begin incorporating more free weights. So far, so good. The only stuff I’d be leery about doing are things that have the potential to be more dangerous. I’ll have to ease into it.

For me, it’s been 50 fat/30 protein/20 carb. I’m aiming for mostly low/healthy fat and low carb. It seems to be working well for me. I still work out regularly as I don’t want to lose too much muscle.

Looks good. My recommendations:

  • Increase font size for the articles. Looked pretty tiny, even at just 1280 × 800 resolution.
  • Widen your template a bit or give more width to the articles.

How do you all carry your change of clothing and soap/shampoo? Any recommended products that aren’t too pricey? I have a blue container I can put a bar of soap in, but that just sounds messy.

Thanks.

Thanks, everyone. Some good advice on the bare foot thing. Flip-flops sound like a good idea.

Been taking 10-30 seconds at a time lately to bring the window up so I can even begin entering the food I’ve eaten. So incredibly frustrating.

Would it be possible to work out at home? You might be surprised at what can all be accomplished without visiting an actual gym. I’ve actually been doing Wii Fit lately as I’d rather spend time with my kids than at the gym. You’re not alone in scheduling difficulties. :-/

I think they’re too busy working on this weirdness to bother with competing operating systems like Android that are projected to top the iPhone in 2012…

Hi all,

I’ve been working on a home gym in my garage and have a Bowflex and weight bench. The last component I’d like to get is a used treadmill. But I’m a bit cautious as it seems a treadmill would break down easier than weight equipment. I’d like to buy used (probably off Craigslist) and not spend a fortune.

1) Does anyone have a recommendation on brand and/or model?

2) If anyone has experience with use of these at home, do treadmills tend to break down often?

I plan to run for about 15-30 minutes 3-4 times per week. I live in MN, so it gets cold in the winter. My plan has been to use portable heaters.

Thoughts? Suggestions? Thanks!

- Matt
