Hey,

while it is obviously a very personal choice of what cardio gear you use, the treadmill has some advantages especially when starting with running.

One is that you can have an ever constant training environment, something that is crucial when you want to track your progress more exact.

The cushioning of the treadmill also is easier on your joints – but of course that implies that once you make the step to “real” outdoor running you need to slow down a little and give your body a week or two to adapt to the new ground conditions (would you say that in english “ground conditions”? I don’t think so, please correct a german guy :-) )

Other than that: If the weather conditions are too extreme and unsteady (too hot, too cold, too icy) the treadmill is of course an alternative to doing nothing at all.

A disadvantage is that you prevent your body being cooled by wind, so you heat up more on the treadmill, having possible negative effects on your metabolic endurance.

My 2 cents,

Oliver

Hi,

I have been a heavy consumer of “Coke Zero” before. I was always thirsty, hungry and had stomach problems. I quit it. From one day to the other. My thirst is gone, due to the lack of sweeteners and the body reaction to it (=expect real sugars) i am not hungry after drinking and my stomach feels calm and soothed. Switched to tea and still mineral water.

So, my personal experience: Make a hard cut, and enjoy feeling better already after a few days.

My 2 cents,

Hey rattler201,

I would agree that the focus for external apps lies within iOS for dailyburn at the moment. However, this is understandable as iOS provides the a consistent experience without the need to worry about different devices – it’s easier from a programmers point of view. If it was wise to announce a vapor-ware Android app for such a long time, is a totally different story.

When it comes to making a decent mobile site, I must however object to your estimates. It all begins with the need to elimante all Flash elements (=all graphs) and while there are pretty good JavaScript libraries available that can do that, the programming involved is much heavier than just two pizzas, a sixpack of Bud and some hours fun coding. Also a proper mobile port must provide a really thought through UI and UX, otherwise it does not make any sense, because the current site is viewable on mobile browsers already (sans Flash that is, for iOS users). So I would gauge a project like this more in the range of 2-3 months. I am speaking from experience :-) (see me signature)

Sorry for the tech babble vocabulary.

My 2 cents,

Hi darkstar5,

thanks for your comment. Don’t misunderstand me: I find it absolutely inept to announce a product and not deliver over such a long timeframe. Instead of being mum, I guess dailyburn would be much better off saying something about this subject, even if it is: Sorry, we won’t make that Android app. I am not defending db on their communication matters here.
I do wonder myself, what takes so long. Dailyburn has pretty functional API that works out of the box, so creating an Android app around it (even if it is just rudimentary in the beginning) does not sound like a herculean task.

All I wanted to say is that redevloping the site to be accessible for mobile use (and that is not programming an app) takes substantially more time than suggest in a post before.

Again, sorry for the tech babble,

Oliver

Hi!

It’s a pity you don’t keep your nutrition log, that would make giving a (vaque) remote advice a little easier. If you changed your diet to eating higher amounts of fiber you must be aware that you need to up your fluid intake as well – otherwise the effect your desired by adding fiber is turned into the exact opposite. So how much do your drink (really :-) )? What plan are you following?

For the gain of muscle mass, you should add more protein after workouts to reach that goal. Eating bran cereals won’t give you the desired effect in that respect.

Hi andy311,

when drinking protein shakes you gain the best results when doing it in the half hour after your workout.

So, given your schedule you should drink a shake after your weights and then do the cardio.
Don’t overdo it with the amount of fluid, or you may feel bad when doing the cardio (overhydration during excercise is more of a problem than most people think). To find the right ratio, the is no other way but try for yourself.

After cardio you will not necessarily need another shake, from my personal experience it is better to head home and have some high protein dinner (fish, cottage cheese, turkey, the usual suspects), because it makes your stomach feel fuller which in turn makes your brain think you’ll now fully compensate for the strenuous excercise you have gotten it through. Furthermore the digestion process takes longer keeping the additional protein flow constant over a longer time.

My 2 cents,

Oliver

Hi,

expanding the real lung volume is a long undertaking, mostly found with top atheletes and training under certain environmental conditions.

However, you may strengthen your lungs muscular tissue, either of course by doing extendeded workout or using medical devices.

I can personally recommend the stuff from power-breathe (http://www.powerbreathe.com/) I do own one of their Kinetic series devices, but that is mainly because I am obsessed with things that have a display :-) That being said, the cheaper models do pretty much the same job, but naturally do not provide any “breathing workout data”.

It has helped in the beginning, at my current “state” it is not so helpful anymore – I recon it to come into real usefulness again when I want to significantly step up my performance one day. In any case it gives you a relatively easy and convenient way to train your lung muscle on non-workout days.

Hope that helped,

Oliver

Hi divepirate,

if you have done everything right, the custom tracker should appear on your “Locker room”→“Edit body entries” under the headline “My Custom Tracking Options”. If that is allright, you can use them by clicking on “Track body” button in your locker room. In the popup window you select your tracker from the list that defaults to “Body Weight”, your custom trackers can be found at the bottom of that list.

Hope that helped,

Oliver

Hi all,

the question is of course what “moderate physical activity” is. Wedzir is right in saying that lot of governmental initiatives promote daily activity, but since our governments know that we are a bunch of of lazy folks, when they say “moderate” I guess they are aiming at things like “Walk xxxx steps a day” or other programs like that. I don’t think that the “moderate” wording implies in any way to head over to your local gym and do a whole workout everyday (which would be pretty counterproductive for any untrained person (and even some trained))

My 2 cents,

There is this saying that weightloss is done one third through physical activity and two thirds through nutrition, which I feel from personal experience is absolutely true.

But even if the “workout” portion seems to be small, it plays a major factor in adjusting your body to sustainable healthy eating, by changing the way your metabolism works and how the caloric intake given to fuel the body is used. However, Wedzir is absolutely right: If the diet is bad, you can workout as much as you like – you will not succeed, but also the other way around if you want to keep the weight. So a good diet always includes physical workouts tailored towards the nutritional parameters of the diet.

Pasta tracking is always uncooked, since you can never tell how much water will be in the pasta after being cooked, because that depends on how you like your pasta (al denta, soft) and that is only influenced by the water in the pasta.

For your leftovers, you have to make a guess as to how much that is from the cooked portion. If you at half of the cooked portion, you would log 42.5g pasta for yesterday and 42.5g for today.

At least this is how I did it (and hopefully didn’t do wrong :-) ).

Hope that was helpful for you,

Oliver

Hi iallrd8it,

once you got used to tracking the food you eat at home, I becomes much easier to make an educated guess about how many calories linger around on the plate in a restaurant.

In the end you will never be able to exactly reproduce the calories for tracking, but that is fine.

We should not be slaves to the tracking. Making a good guess based on experience is absolutely fine and does not spoil the fun of eating out.

Hi acowart,

most of your current weight drop can surely be traced back to loss of water., and is within normal parameters. (I remember my first dieting week, my new best friend was the scale because I lost weight literally “hourly”. But be prepared for that this will not go on like this forever.)

The list of foods that “help with burning fats” is rather general, and some ingredients have no proven effect on fat loss.
Furthermore one must say, that this is Detox plan – obviously not meant for sustainable dieting success. Detoxication is mostly used to prepare a proper diet or nutrition change.

However, my personal opinion towards “Detox” is rather critical, because I have yet to see a medical proof, that any kind of detox is necessary for an average, more or less healthy person. Anyone here who can help with this?
