The BMR is pretty accurate on here. I try to create a net 500 calorie deficit (for instance, my BMR is 1400, so I have a net calorie goal of 800-1200). If you’re not seeing success, lower your activity level. I had to go down to sedentary for a while to lose any weight; however, now I’m seeing weight loss again with moderately active. Instead of the guidelines it says, try using these (they’ve worked for me…when I actually follow them :P): I’d average these out. For instance, I walk about an average of an hour a day and run an average of an hour a day, plus the physical activity involved in being a musician and having a fast food job on weekends and teaching on weekdays. That puts me at moderately active. You have to choose what works for you. Just experiment. As long as you are honest with both exercise and nutrition and have a deficit of 400-700 calories from your BMR, rather than a deficit from what you are eating, there is no reason why you shouldn’t lose weight. And, to answer the question about athletes: I’ve been doing some research, since I’m turning myself into a marathon runner. The best answer is that they eat what they need. Your body will tell you what you need rather than what you want if you listen carefully. Topic: Diet and Nutrition / What's the best way to calculate my caloric need??? |

Well, I saw an ad for Advanced Acai and thought I would try it. Who else has had any experience with this? Does it work? Is it dangerous? I try not to take supplements (just a multivitamin and some calcium to avoid shin splints), so this is new, but I’m having some issues losing weight and am somewhat stuck on what I’m able to eat right now. Okay, so a couple of strange things. It claims mostly to suppress appetite (and act as an anti-oxidant, of course). I would say it’s a placebo effect, but I didn’t know it was supposed to do this until after I took the first one, and 30 minutes after, I was definitely not hungry for much, although I was craving fruits and veggies (for those who know me, this is really strange). The same thing this morning; I usually eat a light breakfast anyway, but now I’m not hungry at all and am just craving maybe an apple. I’m thinking it’s the amount of fiber; for me, whatever you start the meal off with is what I usually crave to finish it. It also claims to boost energy, but I’m not seeing it. I’m more serious about running than I am about weight loss for the sake of itself, so I’m willing to use this if for some strange reason it’s acting in a way it shouldn’t but is very effective about it. The thing I’m most concerned about is: is it dangerous? I can’t find any data that says it is or is not. Topic: Supplements / Advanced Acai |

I’m actually getting married in December! (We talked about eloping last night as a joke, but it might actually happen, so we may be in the same boat). Anyway, good luck, and I’ll be rooting for you! Topic: Fitness Challenges / Look good for my "wedding" by modestoluke |

I don’t carry my mileage over – I log for each day. I do walk that much – I spend many hours on my feet at my job, I don’t drive unless I have to and usually walk at least 5 miles on campus each day (in addition to recreational walks a few times a week). I log everything on the pedometer. If it’s carrying over, it’s not because I intend to. I usually don’t have time to pay attention to the challenges except when weekly results come out, so I apologize for not seeing this earlier. Thanks for the clarification. I posted this on your wall, but for the benefit of everyone: I’ve contacted DB. They have yet to get back to me, but I’m hoping they will fix it. Topic: Fitness Challenges / Walk through May 2010 by infinity413 |

Omron pedometers are heavy duty and reliable – I wear mine all day, every day. It actually motivates me to walk a couple of extra miles a day. Topic: Fitness Challenges / Walk through May 2010 by infinity413 |
