A lot of people have found good success with PAGG which was formulated by Tim Ferriss in the 4-Hour Work Week. The major benefit of it is that all of the ingredients are with anti-oxidants or lower cholesterol by themselves and it contains no stimulants. You can check out the leading brand here:

To answer the question about why you would use fish or krill oil instead of flax oil, the fish body oils include omega-3s in the form of DHA and EPA. These are the potent forms that have the magical effects on your body that you always hear about. Flax is high in Alpha Linoleic Acid (not to be confused with alpha lipoic acid), which the body can convert into DHA or EPA.

However, there are mountains of studies showing the direct supplementation with DHA or EPA makes a big difference compared to something like flax alone. If you’re a vegetarian there are algae options which are a bit more expensive but do also include high levels of DHA and EPA. For people who don’t mind a fish oil though I have found Flameout from Biotest to be one of the best on the market http://goo.gl/B5Auz

A lot of recommendations for fish oil consumption are not high enough. Recent studies have shown that for a significant amount of omega-3 lipids to be incorporated into cell membranes you may need to consume fish oil at a rate of 2 grams of DHA/EPA combined / day for up to 12 weeks. There is a great summary of this research in a recent leangains.com post here:

The Vitamin D Council has done a great job over the years of compiling research on vitamin D, its importance in maintaining good health, and just how deficient most people in the US and Canada are. Check them out here

http://www.vitamindcouncil.org/

When a big study came out of Michigan on vitamin D supplementation a few years ago they found upwards of an 80% reduction in breast cancer rates in those that took 1000iu a day. The Canadian government even made a blanket recommendation for people to start supplementing vitamin D after this and considered revising the recommended daily allowance, which is not something they do very often.

Taking PAGG anywhere between 0-30 minutes before a meal is ideal. There are a couple of studies which suggest that around 30 minutes prior may yield the highest concentrations of ALA in your bloodstream, but the difference between that and taking it immediately prior to the meal is going to be pretty small. The most important thing is to remember to take it, and for a lot of folks, it’s easiest to remember just before you take your first bite.

Taking the multi and krill won’t present problems, but you might want to take them with a meal to help reduce and krill burps.

disclaimer: I work for Pareto Nutrition, but these instructions are valid for homebrewed PAGG as well. If you homebrew your PAGG I suggest paying a bit more to get capsules for at least the ALA since the dissolution rates of tablets can vary a lot based on what’s going on in your GI tract and how the tablets were manufactured.
