I am getting more than a little frustrated with no news on an Android app. While I understand that there may be a given amount of time to get an app developed and tested, I’m starting to believe that DB is not interested in actually ever getting this done. I also must say that this is a huge disappointment and negligent of a large segment of users. I know that currently the iphone is the darling of the development community, it is tied to only one carrier. Android phones are available for virtually all cell companies. While the company I work for uses iphones for some employees, the vast majority of friends/family that I know have an Android phone. I don’t know of anyone in my circle who has an iphone. If there is really no plan to release an app, just say so. No point in mucking about and getting members in a froth for no reason. Heck, in the amount of time that this has been discussed someone could have learned to write Android apps and gotten it done already. In regards to the third party app, if they can wrap the iphone app and make a release for Android, why can’t you? Topic: General Discussion / Android App |

@kate – I do appreciate the reply. I don’t want anyone to have the wrong impression, I really do like the DB site. I have been an member for quite some time now (since you were Gyminee) so that is not the complaint. My only issue has been with the perceived foot dragging on getting an android app done. There are posts back to January 2009 asking for this. Most of those note that these members, myself included, would be interested in a Pro membership if an Android app were available. While I’m not so naive to believe that this would be necessarily true for the vast majority of forum members who have posted, there is a considerable number us who are very serious about it.I agree with you 100% in regards to protecting your intellectual property in regards to third party developers. I don’t think anyone could argue with someone violating copyright to create an app. I certainly wouldn’t want my hard work ripped off for someone else’s benefit. No fault on DB for that. My issue has been seeing posts from DB staff saying that an app is in the works and then seeing nothing. I have been in the IT field for over a decade and I know that it does take time to get new software written, tested, debugged and retested. But with apps flying in for everything else at about four a minute I fail to understand why this is such an enormous project. Was the iphone app this much chaos to produce as well? I would be interested in the FAQ if you could post a link. The frustration for most of us I believe is not having any real answers or some sort of time line. Saying soon or it is in the works only gets folks wound up and testy after so long. Especially when another platform is off an running and we have to read about it on the forums. More than happy to be a motivator. Also can always use some motivation myself. Most of my program is centered around powerlifting, but I cool with helping out in other areas. Been a member here for a couple of years and seen quite a few friends come and go. But I’m still here grinding out the routines and pushing iron. Welcome to the site. Now let’s see if we can hit some of those goals why don’t we? Topic: Motivation and Support / In need of a few good Motivators :) |

I remember what it was like when we had babies in the house. Of course now the youngest is 12 and the oldest is 22. Definitely need to get some energy and endurance in before the new one arrives. More than happy to help with motivation for you. I can always use someone to boost me as well. Most of my program centers around powerlifting, but I don’t have a problem with people doing other things. Glad to have you with us. People cutting in while you’re trying to get your sets done. Then I have to yell at them. Hey get out of my garage you bum! Dang transients. The joys of having a gym of your own. Although I do miss see the 30 somethings who come in, load 10# more than I have on the bar, do one bad rep and then limp off. Half expected one to either cut their head off on the bench or blow a hip in the squat rack. Get back in the jazzercise class you trolls! Seriously though, my biggest peeve when I had a gym membership were the people who used the free weight area for anything but weights. No stretching, chatting or checking yourself out in the mirror. We’re trying to get some work done here. If it doesn’t involve lifting a heavy barbell, do it somewhere else. Topic: Just For Fun / My Fitness Pet Peeves |

Rope jumping is one of the best. If you aren’t quite coordinated to actually get over the rope (like me) you can just do the motion for the same effect without the faceplant. Do that in a HIIT routine and you’ll be at 80% heart rate in no time. You can also find some fairly simple (yet surprisingly difficult) plyometric exercises that do both strength and cardio. If you’re into doing the DVD thing the Biggest Loser will get the heart pumping. Topic: Fitness and Exercise / Exercises At Home |

Okay, this may be unpopular with some, but sorry this is what I think. P90X is just that latest in a long line of take the basics, put them in a package and call it new. There is nothing or really innovative in the program from what I have seen. Before the flame war begins let me give you some examples. The vast majority of the exercises in P90X are what trainers have been saying to do for years. Crunches are good. Pull-ups and chin-ups are good. Push ups are fantastic exercise. No new stuff here. Matter of fact I don’t have any issue with what the program is. The only complaint that I would offer would be that using the philosophy of go until you drop can actually do more to demotivate and possibly injure someone who is not accustomed to such rigorous activity. The diet is nothing new either. Proteins and a low amount of complex carbs. Whole grains and vegetables. Look at Atkins, the Anobolic diet or even HCG program. Same basic principle so no new idea, just new packaging. I won’t say it’s a bad program, because it’s not. Do you need to spend $100+ to get the same thing. No. Just don’t be disillusioned by the fancy advertising and svelt people in the commercials. They didn’t get that way using the program, they are paid fitness models. Will it work? The small print on the screen says results may (will) vary so keep that in mind. Simple rules here: weight is lost in the kitchen, not the gym. There are dozens of websites and other sources that have good, sensible diets with the aim of losing weight and getting in shape. Second, muscle burns fat. There is not six week cure to a decade of neglect. Fat is fuel and muscles are the engine. Any program, with a sensible diet and a good balance of strength and cardio will get you to the goals you want. The biggest factor is how much you are willing to invest your time and effort. It’s got to be a lifestyle change and not just a band-aid fix. Topic: General Discussion / P90X reviews?? |

The easiest way to remember it is that carbs are immediate fuel and protein is the primary building block for muscle. Since your diet is mostly whole grains and veggies for carbs you should be okay. Simple carbs are the killers but that doesn’t seem to be an issue in your diet. Personally for me, it works best to have a great deal more protein and keep the carbs to a minimum. I shoot for less than 60g a day. But I’m over 40 and my goals are for powerlifting. So I am not concerned with hypertrophy for bodybuilding or endurance for long distance running. I want massive amounts of power for just a few seconds. You do have to keep in mind that muscle weighs a great deal more than fat, kind of like wood compared to styrofoam. So weight loss initially is good, but once you put on some muscle you will notice that it will slow down. A lot. Sometimes even go in reverse. At that point you really have to look at body fat percentage instead of just what the scale says. I weigh in around 240 but most people guess me at around 210. I’m not built like a body builder either. Just a perception that people have. Also keep in mind that high levels of protein are hard on the kidneys so you have to drink lots of water. Which can also be hard on your kidneys. If you’ve had any kidney issues in the past you may not want to do that. Topic: Diet and Nutrition / Need Advice on Protein vs Carb Ratio |

Yep, weights and proteins. Veggies are good but don’t build muscle. Beans, meat and dairy. Protein powders can help with bulk as well. Just don’t go nuts with it. Most protein sources also have a good deal of fat as well. At the same time find a good strength program. There are several really good ones available right here on the site. Very recently I started using the iphone web page on my non-iphone and initial impression is, very good. I wish I could give it a great, but there are a couple of things that I wish were different. First off, why can’t you add an extra exercise like you can on the regular site. Just about every week I do something above and beyond the regular sets and reps in my programs. I know I could add these exercises permanently, but they change based on my short term workout goals. So I prefer to add them as I do them. I know that the programming to do the drop downs might be more than we want to get involved with so it’s not like it’s a deal breaker for me. Second thing is why isn’t there somewhere to add workout notes? This is true for both the mobile and the regular website. My printed sheets have a space for me to make some notes about the workout and even grade myself. I like doing this as I can look back and see what was going on. Mostly it’s just stuff like ‘last set of squats were shaky’ or something like that, but I do like having that on there as well. I think sometimes the numbers don’t tell the whole story. Overall I give the site 4.5/5.0 so don’t misunderstand my issues. It is very good and I really appreciate it. I think these things might be some good ideas as well. Forum members, what are you’re thoughts? Topic: General Discussion / What I love/hate about the iphone site |

Glad to hear that you’re getting started on a healthier lifestyle, Brent. DB is a great site to help keep you motivated and focused on your goals. Lots of great people and good advice. I strongly encourage people to get involved, ask questions and even ask for help when they need it. We all have and do need that. I’ve just sent you a motivator request. We can both help each other stay honest. ;-) I’ve got a little over a week until I quit smoking after 25+years, so I could use some help there myself. Anything we can do to help, just give us a shout. Topic: Motivation and Support / 346lbs -- Here to finally get fit. |
