I’ve only heard good things about SS. do it. I cant because of injuries. Make sure your form is good, esp. on squats. But SS works.

Dus, you might want to rethink your plan for several reasons. I have to go to school right now so in the interim perhaps you can do your own research but that plan doesn’t sound great.

does the study refer to timing/sets or the actual lifts or both? i was just referring to the lifts chosen. for example replacing the leg press and curl with squats and reverse lunges, and pull downs with chin ups. also, 60 lbs of increased muscle mass in one month? do you have a link to that? that insane. i’ve heard of humans maxing out at gaining 3-4 lbs max of muscle/ month, post beginner gains.

interesting reads all around. the site with the Colorado experiment info also sells a lot of infomercial type scam products so I’d be wary of all of that. But yeah, SS is the go to solution. I personally found it boring to start with so I’m doing Westside, but thats neither here nor there.

working out a muscle group every day does NOT cause that muscle to be big and bulky. muscle growth comes from adequate rest and excess calories and protein. that said, abs and other select muscles are Type I slow twitch and thus have more endurance, can be worked out more often but you still need breaks for certain. also, don’t expect massive results from pushups and situps (situps are a bit more useful) as far as muscle growth or fat loss. doing them often will only make you better at those movements, you need to incorporate real resistance training to gain muscle and real cardio to lose fat (or calorie management)

as for taking rests, rest in between lifting sessions allows for muscle growth. cardio/conditioning hinders that a little but if thats part of your training, so be it. i used to be an obsessive biker/runner so i understand. however for serious lifters you need rest, esp. since your cns can burn out and even if you have the strength/muscle youll find yourself unable to recruit it for key lifts.

for a complete beginner it seems alright esp. if you’re set on using this machine and not free weights (you obviously are stupid statement). once you get a bit more advanced you might think about splitting up your routine through out the week. and be careful, machines lock you into an arc of motion and they do some of the work for you sometimes so it seems like you can do more weight than you should be, and it easy to push yourself too hard.

finally, figure your daily caloric needs and exceed them by about 200-300 calories, taking in extra protein and spreading it out with 5-6 meals a day if you want the ideal recommended way to gain muscle.

the fact that abs can’t make as much strength gains as other muscle groups is why I said that sit ups are more ‘useful’ i.e. doing situps is closer to the ideal workout for abs then pushups are to the ideal workout for upper body.

sorry hit enter too quickly… you will not gain significant muscle doing pushups. if anything pushups are a formula for injury since you can’t adjust the weights or positioning as comfortably. pushups have a place but not as a core exercise for muscle development. if you want to increase mass to increase BMR, lift weights.

i know the jury is out on splenda’s long term side effects and how exactly it is processed and stored. my question is, splenda is nominally zero calories and zero grams of sugar. is it really treated this way in the body and is there really no fat storage response triggered by Splenda?

i think the body releases more adrenaline when you’re sick so weight lifting might see an improvement.

thats not a problem, i wont eat any other sweets. im just wondering if splenda will have a similar metabolic response as sugar even though nominally it can claim to be zero carbs and zero sugar.

hey man, no hostility at all. im sorry if I came off that way. its just that the internet proliferates a lot of bs, its known for that, and this study seems superficially to be just that. and a lot of sources always cite a figure of 2-4 lbs of mass per month. high strength gains will come with any program as you’re learning movements and getting ‘beginner’ gains. personally I would want you to do something else so you don’t waste your time on a fad program and do something with highly proven results (SS, west side). but to each his own.

so does that mean if i drink a carton of coke zero that should have no fat gaining consequences? somehow, I can’t accept that. i foresee some sort of discovery regarding changes in insulin sensitivity with Splenda intake, hopefully in the near future so I can know to stop drinking this crap.
