Any tips? I travel quite frequently for work and I find it difficult to continue my healthy eating habits when having to eat out for almost every meal. I try to bring protein bars to eat for breakfast and take advantage of free fruit and toast on breakfast buffets but lunch and dinner kill me! Any tips on making sure I get enough protein, carbs, and good fats throughout the day?? |

From one Aggie to another, travel can be hard. |

try to buy food at the grocery store rather than at a restaurant. most have reasonable salad bars and then you get to pick what is and isnt in your salad. also pick up a bunch of whole fruits that you can carry around for snacks, or some nuts. go for simple, go to a sub shop and get turkey/lettuce/tomato on wheat bread instead of a roll. check out “eat this, not that” they have recommendations for what to pick at lots of national restaurant chains so you can know what on the menu won’t be overkill. |

I deal with this a lot as well. It really sucks when not only can you not cook for yourself, but often other people are choosing where you get meals. Two key things I try to remember are: 1. Don’t panic. I end up overeating during travel when my schedule for the day is uncertain and I’m not sure when I’m going to eat again, if there will be vegetarian options, etc. If I make myself calm down and trust that I’m not going to starve, I do much better. 2.Sometimes you just have to limit your portions to make up for your lack of control. It’s still not healthy to be eating pizza, but if your only option is pizza you can eat a much smaller portion than most people and not end up eating a million calories. And yeah, what everyone else says. I carry nuts around obsessively while traveling, like a squirrel. |

I agree with many of the suggestions. Planning is key. Pack ahead and know your options when you get to where you are going. I actually just did a blog post about it. Hope that gives you some good tips too! |
