While it’s important to eat protein and carbs after a workout to help muscle recovery… I’m becoming tired of the the same ol’ PB on wheat and I’m looking for some suggestions.. What’s your favorite post-workout snack? -Scout |

Have you tried chocolate milk? Simple carbs and protein. Pretty tasty too. Do you like whey protein? I love vanilla whey protein powder with vanilla almond milk and a banana. |

I’ve totally gotten hooked on Kind bars. Crunchy, chewy, slightly sweet and no creepy ingredients. They’re very natural and delicious. Otherwise I often do milk and a banana. |

It’s my favorite. Most people don’t seem to love the vanilla the way I do. :) |

If you want Chocolate Milk get the Promise Land Organic Midnight Chocolate – it’s brown crack in a bottle. Wow that stuff is good…. For a spin on PB&Wheat – get some Peter Pan Honey Roasted Peanut Butter and Wheat Crackers. Try Hummus and Pita, too! |

My favourite post-workout snack used to be a pottle of low fat yoghurt and a small handful of all-bran. Worked a treat. |

r u talking something right after a workout or your normal whole meal? myself i love a shake. If i am looking to lean out its mostly protein but if im looking more towards recovery or building I will have a MRP type that has more carbs. 30ish mins later I will have a regular meal. I currently take most my carbs pre workout in the form of oats and whey and some PB. proatmeal…yum! :) |

A healthy post-workout snack would be anything in moderation. You don’t want to be pigging out after every workout. If you do the latter, there is a bigger chance of abrupt weight gain if you also suddenly stop working out. :D |

Would a 15 gram protein bar containing 180 calories combined with a double scoop of whey protein shake at 260 calories be acceptable after an hour workout while trying to cut weight while still staying at a daily calorie alotment of about 1700 calories for the day? |

My favorite post-workout snack is a Green Monster: Blend together: 2 C baby spinach, 1 scoop Any Whey protein powder, 1 C unsweetened almond milk, 1 tsp cinnamon, 1 TBSP chia seeds, and 1 FROZEN banana. Freezing the banana gives you the coldness of ice, without the annoying bits of ice that never seem to get well-blended. It’s about 250 calories so I only drink this after a substantial workout (e.g., a 1 hour run) but it’s delicious and packs in a lot of carbs, protein, and vitamins. |

@scoreman, how you choose to consume your post workout nutrition is up to you, but as a rule of thumb I would stick with a ratio of 2 grams of carbohydrates to every one gram of protein (some recommend as high as 4:1 ratio). You want to keep fat intake to a minimum. |

I do a tasty treat that has loads of protein and crabs, Chocolate Whey protein with 3 cups of 2% milk and then a peanut butter and honey sandwich on white or whole wheat. It’s the best :) |

gempdx67 – your Green Monster sounds amazing! I’m going to give it a shot myself! |

I do whey protein shake w/ skim milk and a banana for my simple carb. The only real reason I use milk is because I do my workout right before bed, and I’ve read you want both the faster and slower acting protein in that case. From what I’ve read milk is mostly casein, so it seems like a good mix to me. If I was working out during the day I’d probably mix with water instead. |

But for example if you want to lose weight isn’t it better if you eat 1 hour after workout? This is at least what I have heard and plus I don’t really feel hungry after workout. |
| Dec 14, 2010 2:22pm |
@viaravis, that’s not true. It seems that about 90% of what people “hear” is false. If you aren’t hungry after a workout, then don’t feel like you have to eat. But most people get ravenous after a strenuous workout. It’s better to have a small, balanced snack then to pig out later, which is many people would do if they didn’t have one. |

Don’t mean to be disagreeable, but it seems to be that what viaravis said could be considered true. Even if you are not looking to really bulk up or anything, getting fast acting protein and carbs in your body ideally in that window right after your workout will aid in muscle recovery and repair. And muscle is more efficient at burning calories(this is something i’ve “heard” but since it also came from my doctor I tend to believe it) it would seem that would help one lose weight. I’m not saying someone should eat even if they feel like they don’t want to, just that viaravis’ comment makes sense to me. |

@tyregiles, I read her question as WAITING an hour after a workout to lose weight. |

oh, I see what you mean now. |
