As a general rule, nutrition comes first, then exercise. If you eat poorly, the effort you put into any form of exercise will have limited benefit.

Aside from that, you’ll need to provide more information about yourself and goals before anyone here will be able to provide any useful guidance.

In any case, Welcome to Gyminee!

BeckieJA, Slaphappy is right. No amount of exercise will overcome a poor diet. Especially the kinds of exercises that aren’t running or weight training. But, you’re likely correct that running on bad knees with extra weight is going to be counter-productive.

Figure out the calories in v.s. calories out thing and start losing some weight. Then worry about the exercise. The nutritional goals and diet advice that is built right into this sight is actually perfect. It’s balanced and sensible and it isn’t a fad diet or a crash diet. If you look at the nutritional section and start keeping a food log according to those guidelines you will lose weight.

A lot of times it isn’t what to do that stops us. Its the idea of actually doing it. Try logging your food for a week, but don’t make any changes to your diet. Just be sure to get into the habit of logging your food. Then take a look at what your “normal” diet looks like. Use this as a baseline. Then you can figure out exactly how you got here! You’ll learn a tremendous amount in just one week.

Support support support! You need to have people that will remind you that you are a good person and that you have all the potential in the world – and you can find that right here at Gyminee. So don’t go away.

There will be plenty of people who say to you, “Oh, what’s one ice cream cone going to hurt?” And ya know if you give in now and then, it won’t hurt (much). So don’t freak out if you fall off the wagon or do something you feel guilty about. Just get back up, dust yourself off, and make the next bite of food count. Every minute is an opportunity for change. You don’t need a new Monday, or a new 1st of the month, or a new year. You just need the next chance to make a choice.

You might consider investing in some light weight dumbbells – lifting a little bit of weight is low impact and can be good for you to help keep some muscle. Everyone needs muscle. Load bearing exercises are very good for avoiding things like osteoporosis. I would consult a doctor (preferably one that is into fitness and can understand your goals and needs) and perhaps get a consultation with a personal trainer.

I understand where you are coming from. I would suggest first talking with your dr. I am sure he or she can recommend a diet for you to follow. A diet that follows the food pyramid is a good place to start.
Once you have a clean bill of health I think a good walking routine is always a very good place to start. Then add some strength training and core work. This is working your abdominals and trunk muscles. The benefits of a core workout are while strengthing your mid-section it also helps with posture. Make sure to always stay well hydrated when you are exercising.
Good luck you will feel really good when you get on a good diet and exercise program. It will become something you look forward to.
