I Lost 20 Lbs! I Burned 50K Calories!

I really detest all cardio, but if I didn’t do it I would catch up with Jabba The Hut within a year. I use an elliptical machine often because it is low impact, but really get bored with it quickly.

Several months ago, a few of us at work were all witnessing a robust expansion of our waistlines, so we started a basketball league. It is a complete comedy act watching us play. Ten engineers abandoning the cubicle for a live display of America Funniest Home Videos would be an accurate description, but it is the best cardio I’ve done in years…. and though exhausting, is a lot fun.

I enjoy running a lot. Especially now that I have the some applications on my smartphone that help make running even more fun. Applications that tell me the distance I’ve run, how many calories I’ve burned, my pace, etc and, all the meanwhile, allowing me to stream music from Pandora or Last.fm makes me look forward to my next run.

Wow…I sound like a walking advertisement.

I like walking, hope to start running eventually if my knee will let me. At the gym I love the rower the best. I use the elliptical but right now it’s so much work that it’s not much fun. I can see it becoming more fun when I get in better shape – especially if I can’t do the running thing.

@wildberry I used to rollerblade years ago, or as I called it “out of control rolling until I ran into something or someone.” It was fun though!

Rollerblading is fun. My gf usually rollerblades when I go running. That way, she doesn’t have to strain herself and I’m encouraged to step up the pace a bit.

I enjoy interval sprinting the most. There is just something about turning that corner into your longest sprint. The way you can feel you heart pumping the blood is such a high.

I run in the morning and then hit the punching bag. The run is peaceful, gives me time to think, and then the punching bag lets me relieve the stress I built up from thinking too much =D

I have two favorites: running and the fitness portion of my karate classes. I really enjoy running because it usually gives me time to think about my thesis (I normally get the best ideas on runs). My sensei, however, really pushes us in our fitness sessions and it’s great to see how far I can actually push myself.

I can’t stand traditional cardio so I stick to HIIT which is short and sweet. When I can I ltake a boxing class.

I also somewhat detest my cardio sessions since I am poor physical shape but I gotta tell you I am in love with the Precor Cross Trainer at the gym. I usually can only last between 10-30 minutes and this thing burns twice the calories of the elliptical so I feel like I am getting twice the workout. On my workout days I usually do a 10 minute warmup and burn 150-180 calories, that is a good boost to the 100 calories I was burning on the elliptical.

Also I have tried spinning and that is a total mental game to me, I sweat like a pig but didn’t feel all that tired afterward. I hope to find an awesome instructor that shares a similar taste in music.

I would love to find a kettlebell, HIIT or boxing class around us but my schedule doesn’t allow for it. The local gym offers all these classes but I can’t raise the funds to pay for the membership (my current gym is free on base where I work).

My favorite is being on my bike, outside. There is just nothing better. It is me and that simple machine, and my Polar Heart Rate Monitor. If you hate cardio, as most of us do, cycling is a great way to go. You don’t have to be Lance Armstrong, or Levi Leipheimer, and it doesn’t have to be such a large investment. Sure there are bikes that cost tens of thousands of dollars, but for less than $1000 you can get a nice road bike, a helmet and some bike shorts and even have a few bucks left over to invest in a Polar Heart Rate Monitor.
I ride 20+ miles each day and can not tell you the importance of a helmet. While you have two arms and legs, you only have one skull. Biker shorts, while silly looking with the big pads will become self evident the day after your first long ride.
Spin classes are great if you have a great instructor. You can burn 700+ calories in a single class! Cycles can bring you the same results, but when you get off, you are in a different place than when you got on. Check this out: Ride to work. It saves you $$$, saves the planet from your car belching out its toxic stuff and keeps you healthy. Some communities have tax breaks and some businesses pay extra for you to choose a cycle over a car!
With a Polar Heart Rate Monitor you can track your progress over time. Polarpersonaltrainer.com gives you a place to upload your data and track it over time so you have goals to shoot for.
Cycling gives you an instant new group of friends too. As soon as people know you are into it you will discover the closet cyclists you may already know. Now you can talk connect with them on a whole new level by talking about bikes, equipment and sharing new trails. You can’t have too many healthy friends!

Currently my daily cardio is my warmup. I begin either with intervals on concept II rowing machine for a total of 1200m or between 5 and 8:30 on the recumbent bike. If I can’t get 2 miles in under 5 min, I bike for 3 miles in under 8:30.
On my conditioning days I do one of the above and then complexes.

I Burned 5,000 Calories!

No question my favorite cardio is Zumba
I absolutely LOVE dancing in the morning!

I’m certain my kickboxing class actually burns more calories though, and her soundtrack absolutely rocks – so its a close second.

I love running – but I dont get to do it often enough because I don’t want to run alone. Isnt that a shame? I just don’t feel safe.

My favorite cardio would be NO CARDIO AT ALL. Sorry, I hate cardio, I just do it to keep my heart healthy and to keep from gaining too much fat because I have slower metabolism. I love the feeling I have after running, but I honestly dont want to have to go through with the running to get that feeling.

LOL @bentellgient…I’m exactly the same. Find cardio so utterly boring and it’s something i just loathe doing. Lifting weights any day of the week :)

That being said, something like outdoor hiking in a beautiful location like the Inca Trail I do find very enjoyable.

So many people I see here find cardio boring, and I can understand that if they only do it on treadmills or other stationary machines, especially if you add on top of that that you are located inside.
.
In my mind cardio should be done outside, and include actual transference of the body from point A to point B. Normally we just call that running, cycling, rollerblading, x-country skiing, hiking or what have you (swimming is kind of a special case unless you live close to a lake). But it is really easy to see why all that machine work, done inside on stationary machines can be simply called cardio, because it is so similar and uneventful, so the attention is forced inwards to find variations, like you would in meditation.
.
So what am I trying to say? Go out side! (If you can.) That’s the real thing. Running on a treadmill will never come close to the experience of running outside, not to mention trail running in some beautiful locations. Same goes for all the other machine cardio stuff. If you want to enjoy doing it, go out side. It makes all the difference.
.
A sure way to burn out doing cardio is doing it inside all the time. Lets rephrase that. You can psychologically tolerate much more training if it is done outside, because it is ‘meant’ to be done that way.
