GeekFit Podcast - Adding extra steps

One of the things you always see is to add extra steps to your day. I've tried wearing a pedometer, but either it's a cheap one that doesn't work well, or I don't swing my hips enough for it to register movement :)

So I was thinking of adding more stair climbing to my day, by going up and down the two flights in my building on a regular inteval.

Any thoughts on effectiveness?

I was thinking about taking a trip up and down the steps every time I used the bathroom. I already do some of the others, like parking further away and plan to walk once it's above 40 here.

More suggestions

I actually got a book on walking for fitness, and some of the things it suggests are:

1. Use a bathroom other than the one closest to your office.

2. Walk to somewhere outside to eat your lunch (in better weather i'm sure)

3. Walk to a convenience store when you're out of milk.

4. Occasionally skip a quick email or instant message, and walk to deliver a message to someone.

5. (one I'm doing) walk during your breaks instead of sitting at your desk.

what works for me

I try to park at the far end of the parking lot and I try to walk the whole mall once or twice when shopping. Even if I don't have to go to any stores in a certain wing of the mall... I still try to get in the extra steps. I'm a substitute teacher so I always walk up and down the rows of desks while the students are working. I also offer to help the other teachers if I have a period off by asking if they need me to run to make copies or get them a drink from the teacher's lounge. Hope those tips help.

Hip Swinging

Sorry, I was stuck on the hip swinging visual. *ahem* Yeah, every little bit helps. If you're comfortable doing what you're doing now, add a little more, and then a little more, and before you know it, you're constantly pushing that limit out.

When you get comfortable, your body stops responding.

Every Little bit helps.

My last job was on the 4th floor, and I got into the habit of walking down the stairs.

I think if I did the math, I may find that the over-all calorie burn is rather low. However, the simple fact of extra movement has a psychological effect that shouldn't be denied.
