Returning to exercise after injury

Discussion started by sheppeyescapee

Subject Description

A few weeks ago I had a problem with my achilles tendon and was told no exercise for at least 2-3 weeks.  I've been resting it for 2 weeks now and am itching to get back out.  Any recommendations on easing back into it, I was only doing brisk walking when the problems started, doing about 6mph and 4-5miles at a time in a hilly area with 15-20 degree inclines.

Holy Jogging Batman

6 miles per hour is a little fast. That's a jog for most and a run for me.

Listen to the doc

You should always follow the Dr's recommendations.  Having said that (and no, I don't practice what I preach), I think going out for moderate walks would be okay - but stick to level ground (no hills.)  I think the hills would just aggravate your injury.  You may want to consider a treadmill (yeah, boring I know) to avoid the potential rock/pothole/stick/whatever.

The hills aren't really optional, but maybe taking it slower.  I mostly walk around my neighbourhood which is a hilly area.
