The Dedicated - Bench Press

Check out this T-Nation article which includes a video: http://www.tmuscle.com/free_online_article/sports_body_training_performance/dave_tates_sixweek_bench_press_cure.

I could improve my setup and I need to ensure that I keep my elbows from going below bench level by maintaining an arch which 1) reduces stress on shoulders and 2) decreases the distance I have to lift.

I am going to print a summary of the tips and put it on the wall in front of my rack. Already have a good one for squats.

American Record Set

so we got it done, I lifted at 275+ as I felt I was to weak from the low carbs so I ate large amounts of carbs to get my energy but back, but I got the american record for the junior class at 391, just couldnt get the 402 back up.

Hmm

I wouldn't count on it. Might even be the reverse. Your body does have to use energy to digest and convert your food into energy it can use. Maybe an hour and a half to two hours prior if we're talking whole foods.

Some kind of carbs - a banana or the like would digest quickly. When it comes to quick energy for exercise simple carbs are good for that.

I have avoided dropping calories below 1800 to lose fat but since I wasn't seeing any results, I decided to drop to 1600. Noticing results already and it seems to be more than 200x7 calorie deficit change. Weird! I did notice that my strength dropped yesterday when doing squats and bench press the day before. I think the problem was not the calorie drop but the timing. I don't believe I had enough pre-workout nutrition and it sapped my strength.

No Doubt

No Doubt - dropping 20# in one month is bound to cause a sacrifice in muscle and strength. Bodybuilders have been struggling with how to combat that for 50 years. :)

you know you may have posted that in the wrong place but it is completely relevent to what my last post was, great job ;) It has to have something to do with dropping damn near 20lbs in a month, it was inevitable to lose some muscle

Decreasing Strength

Chris -

That isn't uncommon. It's hard to maintain your strength and drop significant weight. Back on February 14th I did a set of 10 squats at 315 pounds. Yesterday, about 30 pounds lighter on the scale, pushing 265 for 12 was really tough. It is inevitable (IMHO) that you will lose some muscle as you diet down. Even the best bodybuilders (who aren't juicing) will lose strength and muscle as they get lean. The good news is you can get it all back and do it in a manner where you retain most of your leanness. It's a constant battle - if it were easy everyone would do it. :)

Keep your chin up - it's a normal side effect. Just keep lifting hard to keep as much strength and muscle as you can.

I would have to drop 12lb to get to 181lb but I could do those lifts now. The bench would be the easiest because I can do 265lb and am close to making that 270lb. I'm 46.

thats pretty much how I do my bench, it takes me a like a mintue once I lay down to get myself position and the squeezing really does help. Gets your muscles all tensed up. I squeeze the hell outta the bar and then do a quick up pull and almost touch your forehead to the bargets all your muscles flexed. Just gotta come back down in the right position
