My essentials

-Anything techno...especially Da Rude.  Yea, I know - old school, but still gets me going!

-Pop music with a fast beat like Black Eyed Peas, Justin Timberlake, etc.

-Lots of 80's music is fun especially during spinning classes!

Andrew Bird

Andrew Bird's stuff is pretty easy going, but I've found it pretty effective for any kind of exercise. This Song in particular I find really motivating when I'm on the elliptical or treadmill.

Educational Talks

I know this is a little off topic, but a lot of time I like listening to educational speakers (stuff like productivity talks, religious speakers, or even audio books). This is good for when I am doing a long run and need something to take my mind off the pain :-)

playlist...

Bare with me... I recently updated the hard drive in my laptop to a 300gb internal. I've finally able to have ALL my music in one location. I'm trying to get some new stuff as well. What artist are you guys using on your work out playlist and for what kinds of work outs? If we can share artist name we can broaden our musical taste. I'm always looking for new music; spanish, hip hop, jazz, punk, and rock etc etc etc.

Trying to expand my taste...

Ladytron and Bloc Party

...both are good for keeping a fast beat while letting you zone out into a treadmill tempo or long run.

Essential Workout Music

Loverboy's "Turn Me Loose."  Absolute required listening.

Most of Def Leppard's songs.

Just about anything by INXS.

I'm also up there with SarahJ in that I listen to Podcasts and talk radio to engage my mind and to forget about the hard work I'm doing...!

It's Metal for Me

Nice to see someone else works out to metal. I started with a set list of dance and pop and found it didn't motivate me to keep up the pace. Being a metal lover I started listening to the "40 Greatests Metal Songs" while working out. WOW!! What a difference in my energy levels.

I've rearranged the set list to match my workout. when I'm on the treadmill I listen to: The Number of the Beast (Irnon Maiden), Raining Blood (Slayer), Bring The Noise (Anthrax & Public Enemy), Walk (Panterra), Through the Fire And Flames (Dragonforce), Master of Puppets (Metallica) and Run to the Hills (Iron Maiden).

When I'm strength training I listen to: Bulls on Parade (Rage Against The Machine), Dirty Deeds (AC/DC), Paranoid (Black Sabbath), You've Got Another Thing Coming (Judas Priest) and any other with a good metered beat.

What's funny is that because I always listen to the same set list for the treadmill, when I hear those songs outside of the gym my heart speeds up.. like my body wants to get working out. HAHA!

I also find that it's important to find music that is at the same meter (speed) as the intensity you are going for. Specifically referring to the treadmill or other cardio activity. If a song comes on that is slower than I am walking, I find it messes up my rhythm. That is why I stick to my current line up.
