What is essential workout music for you? I'll state an obvious one... Anything by Daft Punk.

My Ipod

I listen to a variety, mostly hard rock, ska, rockabilly and fast rock n roll:

Local bands such as: The Agents (ska), The McGunks (fast Rock), Kings of Nuthin' (rockabilly), and the Amazing Royal Crowns (rockabilly)

More nationally known artists would be The Supersuckers, Joan Jett, Social Distortion, The Kinks, Alice Cooper, AC/DC, The Ramones and the NY Dolls.. The Bones (from Sweden) just to name a few..

I also have this awesome compliation box set of 70's punk songs called NO THANKS! and has mad cool tunes by Devo, The Buzzcocks, Joy Division, Siousx & The Banshees, The Dickies... I could go on and on..

Essential Running Music

I tend to like a faster beat (around 180 BPM) when I'm running. Euro/Dance/Trance seems to be the closest to this. I have an iTunes playlist of some of my favourites for my daily 7K run.

My i-tunes library recently got erased! I need suggestions for new music that will really get me up and running. I was getting bored with my music anyways, so I guess that this was as good a time as any!

I usually start my workouts with Rage against the Machine's "Killing in the name of". Otherwise it's Disturbed, Kanye West, Pink, Marilyn Manson's "Fight Song", System of a Down, Missy Elliot and Slipknot. Oh ok - and occasionally Beyonce.

Killswitch Engage!

Cheery fellow that I am, I begin most of my workouts with this song of theirs called "This Is Goodbye," which might be about suicide...

But! I take the approach of the glass being half full and think of the song as being more about letting go of your old self / improving yourself. It is very powerful and aggressive, and in the middle of a heavy set it gets the juices flowing!

The Faint, Daft Punk, Scissor Sisters, Bloc Party, Justice, Simian Mobile Disco, Crystal Castles, Ghostland Observatory, Rage Against The Machine, Santagold, M.I.A., Rhianna, Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears, Soulwax, MSTRKRFT and remixes galore.

Favorites

I have a lot of different stuff I listen to. I listen to a lot of 80's ska, even though I was born in the 90s (The English Beat, the Specials, the Selecter, Bad Manners, Madness), anything by The Dandy Warhols, rap if I'm feeling really lazy, and some new stuff (Ladyhawke, Blitzen Trapper, The Kills, etc.).

Focus In or Zone Out

It all depends on the workout. On days that I lift, I stick with harder (or fun) stuff. My playlists are peppered with Dead Kenedys, KMFDM, Fear Factory, Slayer, Guttermouth, Black Flag, Rammstein, Judas Preist, kind all over the place. Loud and fast. That's my motto.

I run classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and I have found that the guys prefer harder, faster, louder music. It absoloutely helps push them through the work. Plus, it is ok to yell (motivate!) with the music blasting.

On long metcon days where I don't go for heavy lifts and I am the only one at the gym, I've developed a habit of listenting to music that let's me zone out like DJ Shadow, Portishead and Godspeed YBE. Keeps me from burning out too quickly.

I used to listen to a bunch of rock, but with the workout, I like hearing a heavy drum beat/guitar hit. It gets me going harder. So I made up a playlist for my cardio:

Give It All - Rise Against
Bat Country - Avenged Sevenfold
Hysteria - Muse
Afterlife - Avenged Sevenfold
Almost Easy - Avenged Sevenfold
Peace Sells - MegaDeth
Panic Attack - Dream Theatre
Hammerhead - The Offspring
Welcome Home - Coheed & Cambria
Battery - Metallica
Prisoner of Society - The Living End
All That I've Got - The Used
Master Exploder - Tenacious D
The Sharpest Lives - My Chemical Romance
Dead! - My Chemical Romance
Me Aainst the World - Simple Plan
Hangar 18 - MegaDeth
Famous Last Words - My Chemical Romance

Where to begin..

When I am on the treadmill or elliptial this is how my music goes

Starts out with some Citizen Cope, John Mayer and then Led Zepplin

Then when I increase my speed it goes to Flaw, Non Point, Ill Nino,

Matisahyu's Smash Lies for the real intense part of the run!

Then as I cool down it is back to U2, Journey and Cold Play

Anytime someone hears my iPod the shake their head and are amazed that it goes from Pop to Metal and then to gangster rap!

running music

Pink's new album (Funhouse) has a lot of great songs. I also like Katy Perry and Nickelback. Leslie Roy's song "I'm Gone, I'm Going" is pretty good. Some of my other favorites are: New Found Glory, Fallout Boy, Buckcherry, All Time Low and September.

here's a tip, if you're on a Mac...

I got tired of picking/selecting/choosing songs for a workout set, either cardio or strength.

I recently purchased a very nifty app i'm very satisfied with called "Tangerine".

Basically it scans your iTunes librabry, and then you may create a time/workout based set based on Beats per Minute and Beat Intensity.

Works sweet for me.

Well, I mostly listen to hip-hop because it's the only thing that really keeps me pumped.. lots of Pitbull.. all that energy in reggaeton music really helps keep me going.

I also don't mind some techno...but mostly just techno remakes of other songs. .. otherwise it just makes me feel like I'm at a some rave...

I also really like Papoose - Born to Win ... the lyrics are motivating.

And anything dancey/upbeat that's telling me to MOVE IT or GO GIRL... HAHA -__-;

My best workout music?

Easy. When on the treadmill I listen to Techno/Trance to keep the pace and when I hit the weights I listen to hiphop music.

I know people do not recommend bringing in MP3 players into the Sauna but I listen to mellow Dave Mathews to keep me relaxed.

really mixed...

I have a pretty mixed up mix for mine, but it is mostly up-beat sub-pop and other such things.... Vampire Weekend to Maps and Atlases, mewithoutYou to The Hives, Paramore to OK Go... some semisonic, foo fighters, RATM, spill canvas, Damone, gwen stefani, no doubt... seriously my mix is way mixed haha

Pretty much anything up-beat really works for me on the treadmill, and I just listen to the radio over the loudspeakers when I lift because I tend to zone and not pay attention to those around me when I have my headphones in

Don't call the Karma Police

Here are few tunes I like during those hard cardio workouts when you need to open a can of whupass on yourself. Some of these I first heard and adopted from one of my favorite spin classes at the Y:

Eminem - Lose Yourself. If you don't find yourself grinding it out on the chorus, something's wrong. Very wrong.

Disburbed - Land of Confusion. Hey Superman where are you now? -- great cover of the Genesis hit.

The Raconteurs - Steady As She Goes and Salute Your Solution. Two gems courtesy of the band headed by Nashville's own Jack White. Come to think of it, just about anything by the White Stripes qualifies for this list, too.

Rolling Stones - Gimme Shelter. The buildup makes this the perfect "hill song" when you're on the bike.

Van Halen - Unchained. Great song to run to.

Alas, I can't put Radiohead's Karma Police on this list, even though it's one of my favorite songs to listen to.

depends

On conditioning days I need hype. On cardio days I need space. On most days I need a nice in-between.

For hype, you can't go wrong with:

The Roots

Soul Coughing

Red Hot Chili Peppers

Crystal Method

Fat Boy Slim

Rage Against the Machine

Audioslave

When you're feeling epic, you can work to

Sigur Ros

Brian Eno

U2

Daniel Lanois

For all days in between (most days for me)...

Radiohead

Modest Mouse

Flaming Lips

Fourtet

DJ Shadow

Canon Blue

Bjork

And, if you're in the mood... you could listen to my music (myspace.com/meshachjackson).
I listen to a bunch of different stuff...

It doesnt really mix that well but I don't notice when im running real hard

Right now my play list is something like:

Justin Timberlake - sexy back

Brit. spears - gimme more

Justin Timberlake and Timbaland - bounce

Bionic Jive- The Transporter

Drowning pool - let the bodies hit the floor

Pearl Jam - Do the evolution

My Chemical Romance - Helena

My chemical Romance - The end (good for a running beat)

Brooklyn Bounce - Techno House Rave

Rihana - Please dont stop the music

Brooklyn Bounce - Bass beats & melody (version 1)

Brooklyn Bounce - X2X we want more

Brooklyn Bounce - born to bounce

Brooklyn Bounce - Chill, The begining

Blade - techno rave scene

etc etc... so I have a strange mix of pop, techno/dance and metal/heavy music strange but whatever works right?

I usually listen to the old school 80's hair bands like Poison, Dokken, Skid Row, Motley Crue, Great White, Warrant, Whitesnake etc... It makes me wish I could fit back into my spandex and parachute pants ;)

Some old some new

Seems a pretty common theme; heavier for lifting, better beat for running. I use the same playlist for both. Mostly I think because I have zero rhythm and can't keep a beat tapping my foot, so the beat doesn't much matter to me. It just has to be fast and loud. Right now I have a little from everywhere; Foo Fighters, Blink 182, Brooks and Dunn, Nickelback, AC/DC, Disturbed, Brad Paisley, Bon Jovi, Blue Oyster Cult. The list is long :)

My motivation

My key elements are Underoath and Life In Your Way (both of the hardcore, metal-ish genre)

Some others I throw in there are Emery, Anberlin, and music with a similar flavor.

The Underoath and LIYW gets me through anything--especially the last reps or the big hills. So much emotion, feel like I could go one more!

Hey its cool to see someone else out there who listens to Adam Freeland, he's a great artist.

I personally tend to listen to more electronica then anything else, but rock and metal work really well too.

Currently I am using a lot of Crystal Method (Starting Over is one of my all time favorite songs), Benny Benassi, Body Rockers, some Daft Punk, Eric Prydz (classic), some Da Rude as was mentioned earlier, Fluke, Groove Armada, Prodigy, Goldfrapp (Her new album), Juno Reactor (Mona Lisa Overdrive, awesome song to run to), MUSE, and some various rock/metal groups.

It's Metal for Me

Nice to see someone else works out to metal. I started with a set list of dance and pop and found it didn't motivate me to keep up the pace. Being a metal lover I started listening to the "40 Greatests Metal Songs" while working out. WOW!! What a difference in my energy levels.

I've rearranged the set list to match my workout. when I'm on the treadmill I listen to: The Number of the Beast (Irnon Maiden), Raining Blood (Slayer), Bring The Noise (Anthrax & Public Enemy), Walk (Panterra), Through the Fire And Flames (Dragonforce), Master of Puppets (Metallica) and Run to the Hills (Iron Maiden).

When I'm strength training I listen to: Bulls on Parade (Rage Against The Machine), Dirty Deeds (AC/DC), Paranoid (Black Sabbath), You've Got Another Thing Coming (Judas Priest) and any other with a good metered beat.

What's funny is that because I always listen to the same set list for the treadmill, when I hear those songs outside of the gym my heart speeds up.. like my body wants to get working out. HAHA!

I also find that it's important to find music that is at the same meter (speed) as the intensity you are going for. Specifically referring to the treadmill or other cardio activity. If a song comes on that is slower than I am walking, I find it messes up my rhythm. That is why I stick to my current line up.

Bare with me... I recently updated the hard drive in my laptop to a 300gb internal. I've finally able to have ALL my music in one location. I'm trying to get some new stuff as well. What artist are you guys using on your work out playlist and for what kinds of work outs? If we can share artist name we can broaden our musical taste. I'm always looking for new music; spanish, hip hop, jazz, punk, and rock etc etc etc.
