YMCA Members - Wifi in YMCA?

I am new to the Gyminee thing and started today to keep track of my exercise and eating on my iPhone. The Y I go to does not have Wifi so loading the exercise descriptions is slow. I'm wondering how typical this is.

RE: Wifi

My local Y has freely available wifi. I have used it a number of times in the lobby area while my kids were checked in.

Since discovering Gyminee, I have also started using my iPhone instead of my iPod - the wifi reaches into the workout areas just fine. Another point for iPhone users - you don't need wifi to get to Gyminee!

RE: Wifi

I've never used it but I know my YMCA has WiFi. There is partical coverage inside and outside at the pool.

There is a content filter and I can see why some Ys wouldn't want to add WiFi. It could be very expensive depending on the size of the area they want to cover

Sarre, you fucking rock. I didn't even know a free site like that existed. I'll suggest that to them the next time I go workout.

Silly reasons for not having WiFi

Any half way competent tech could set up a filter for porn. Simply pointing the WiFi's DNS servers to opendns.com would allow the Y to keep people from getting to a whole host of "objectionable" sites. The cost? $0 (which in Euros is probably more). Schools use these filters all the time very successfully.

So today I suggested this to a guy at the front desk of the YMCA. He said that management had considered it in the past, but ultimately rejected the idea because if they had Wifi people could be getting on porn sites at the Y, and since the YMCA is a "Christian organization" they can't allow that. As much as I respect thier position, that's bullshit. Anyone can abuse any power if given the leeway. But just because they can doesn't mean the idea should be rejected completely......Kinda pissed about it but my phone can get online thru AT&T's network anyway,it's just not as fast as Wifi though. Kinda feel sorry for iPod Touch users not being able to get on Gyminee from the gym.

I can't tell you how often I've thought of this recently. I'm about to put in a suggestion to my local YMCA to get damn WiFi in there so people with iPhones or iPod Touches can get online quickly and enter stuff. I mean, it's fairly simple to add. All they'd need is a router and maybe a couple access points.

Re: Wifi in YMCA

I have gone to several YMCA's in my area and none of them allow any phone usage due to camera phones (privacy, pictures in the locker room, etc.) I believe my YMCA would treat iPhones the same way, unfortunately...I have a smart phone as well and was always a bit disappointed by that.
