For love of rowing - introductions

Please introduce yourself and tell us where you row, how long you've been in the sport, and anything else you have a mind to share.

Hello as well...

Like gt16 I realized I am a member of this group yet have not introduced myself. My name's Steve and am a 42 year old health care professional residing in Qualicum Beach, Vancouver Island. I grew up in Nova Scotia and did some competative sculling in high school and early University; I also did Dory competitions in Lunenburg (home of the Bluenose!) and am an avid sailor.

Over the years my weight has crept up on me, so time to change that and I've renewed my love of rowing and plan to make it an important part of my healthy lifestyle.

Hello

Just realised, I've joined this group and not said hello yet, so here I am.

I'm 34, from England and have never taken part in OTW rowing. Nor do I think I will. I am however part of the indoor rowing world.

Had hoped to participate in the World Indoor Rowing Championships in Boston, MA but a change in circumstances means I will have to settle for the English IRC instead.

Planning to enter the 2k (aiming for 6:29.9) and the 500m (aiming for around 1:23).

I train 6 days a week (3 hard days, 3 easy day) and love it. Absolutely love it.So this group makes sense for me :)

Now if I only I can sort my eating out, I'll be a picture of health!

And just a little smack talk...

Just to add a little fuel to the competitive fire:

I've beaten more than a few UT boats in my racing days... :D

About Me

I'm a 26 year old software engineer who is trying to get back in shape. I rowed on the Georgia Tech crew team in the Open 8 and Open 4 classes. I've always enjoyed the challenge of the erg and have been using that to drop the weight that sitting at a desk all day has given me.

I'm currently training to compete in a 2k erg race at Georgia Tech on Valentine's Day. As soon as that is over I will be training for a marathon. I've always enjoyed endurance tests and completed a half-marathon early on in my training.

welcome

to David and ppabian! David, I would be throwing up while trying to simulate race pace (and duration) on an erg! I suppose, though, that I really ought to get on the thing this winter.

It's certainly not strange to hate the Ergo...

I rowed for 4 years during my Undergrad at Oxford Uni in the UK. Rowing is huge there and I made it to my college 1st VIII (the university squad is full of internationals so I had no chance getting into that!). Since coming over to the US I can't row anymore (my college only allows undergrads to row) so have since taken up cycling. I really miss it - and am even heading back to Oxford for the summer to coincide with the main competition (and hopefully get some rowing in myself (: )

Even now I still hate to think of getting on the erg - whether it be 2K tests (generally ending up in a few members of the crew being sick), 5K tests (generally resulting in falling off the erg at the end), 10x500m (with 2 mins break in between which ended up in quite a few more members of the crew being sick) or my favorite/worst workout - the 20-20-20. This was something my coach got us to do which was to row for 20mins on the erg at your 5K pace, then go for a 20min run/jog and then get back on the erg for 20 mins and try to beat your distance you recorded in the first session. Its certainly tough but gets you fit very quickly. Our term is only 8weeks long and it was amazing the difference between the start and end of term...

I have never been on water but teach a rowing class at the Sports Club LA in Orange County, CA. We row 10k-12k Tues and Thurs morning @ 6:30AM.

Hope to get on the water in Newport Bay over the holidays.

last evening row of the season!

Tonight was our club's last night row of the season. The days are just too short now to get much of a session in. We were on the water a couple of minutes after 6 p.m. and had to get back by about 6:50 to have enough light to dock safely.

We are participating in a regatta on Saturday, and we'll keep rowing on Saturday mornings . . . but I am really going to miss my rows during the week. Will have to hit the gym and ride my new bike more often.

calories and mileage

I think most of the mileage is coming from you, sewblue . . . . :)

most of the time I just provide a calorie estimate of my workout.

wanted to row this morning but the wind was pretty stiff, and it might not have been safe. so I went out on my bicycle instead, and that was a good workout because I'm just getting used to a bicycle again after MANY years not riding. Even a short ride is a workout in this hilly part of the world.

calories and mileage

I think we're doing pretty good with our mileage and calorie burned totals considering it's just 2 of us posting. I can't help with the lbs lost because I'm pretty much where I want to be

on water--or in the gym?

Sewblue, thanks for joining.

I'm happy to say that I've never ended up in the water while rowing. :)

Funny, but I really dislike the rowing ergometer in the gym. All the work but none of the pleasure of actually moving the boat. It does feel great.

Our club is rowing tomorrow morning and racing again on Oct. 31.

I had just one opportunity to row a boat and that was on the Demerara River in Guyana and it was a dismal failure. I just kept going in a circle. So I'm sticking to the rowing machine.
