Runners Only - Question about running shoes

Hi,

I was starting to look at getting new running shoes and began reading up on Vibram Five Fingers and shoes similar to them. I was curious if anyone had any advice/experience with these types of shoes. I appreciate any help or suggestions you can give me.

FiveFingers

I've had my VFF's for almost a year now and love them. I've used them for running, working out and hanging out in a river.

Just recently found that they came out with a couple new pairs, I have the KSO's. Might have to try one of the new ones for camping, hiking, running.

Only problem I had with the KSO's is that one run I caught my foot going uphill and now have a small hole in the fabric on the top part of my one toe, but just recently happened.

Highly recommend them. You just have to watch changing running style too fast. If your calves aren't used to it they can become very sore if you push too hard too fast.

Not quite Vibram, but closer....

Something to consider if you're not quite ready for the Vibrams are the new Nike Freeruns. They have a similar motion (forefoot) and no real support to speak of, but aren't quite as extreme. I've been using them for a couple of months as a transition show to the Vibrams. (not quite ready for those yet....) and I can attest to how different they are from my cushion-y Asics.

I also have a pair of VFF's

I love them (and also listened to the Born to Run audiobook, highly recommended) But I still can't seem to find the motivation to go out and run :(

I don't have any bad pain after running in them though, only the good kind of pain, like sore muscles :)

<3 my VFF

I have a pair, just bought them a few weeks ago and I LOVE them!

You have to ease into running with them on and make sure you do your "barefoot running research" Unless you're a forefoot runner already, you'll find your calves are sore.

I personally love the stares and they've been QUITE a conversation starter! I wear mine running and walking around. I even wore them to a wake.

May I also suggest reading "Born to Run" by Christopher McDougall... I'm almost done and its AMAZING!

Vibram Five Fingers

I got really excited about barefoot running - thinking that it was going to solve all my running aches and pains (and injuries). Unfortunately, after I started running barefoot more frequently and using the VFFs, I developed a painful hip problem. I had tossed out my orthotics in my enthusiasm which may have pushed me over the edge. My hip pain continued for nearly a year and it took PT, frequent chiropractic visits and orthotics to set me to right. I have very high arches which may have been a problem in terms of barefooting it. I love the idea of barefoot running still, but I'm afraid to try it more than occasionally on grass since I like to run and hate it when I can't. Just my personal experience. I know many other people who have had great success with the VFFs and with barefooting it. Sadly not me. But the pink VFFs were quite cute and they're still great for walking into streams!

Vibran Finger Shoes

I have not yet personally tried these yet, however, a friend of mine took these as her approach shoes while hiking in Yosemite. She is also a Gyrotechnic instructor. She absolutely swearrs by them. I believe that I am going to purchase a pair in the coming weeks. I believe the hardest part about wearing them is getting over the stares :) Hope this helps!
