I am trying to enlist in the military only thing that is holding me back is my weight and my ability to run do you all have any tips for a beginner trying to run 1k in about a 4 months thanks
Luckily a 1 Kilometer run is something anyone should be able to train for in 4 months. The number one issue with new runners is starting out too hard on their legs, and ending up injured. Get yourself a good pair of shoes, a training partner, run on grass or a track for the first month or so... and build up slowly. You'll be running a 1k no problem before you know it. Try setting a goal of running a 5k before you go to basic training.
I'd love to be a motivator. I used to be an avid runner, let myself go, and am now getting back in.
Can also try cycling on the side, to work on endurance and leg strength. Its much easier on the legs, so you wont risk injury as much, while getting in a lot of training.
.
You can also boost your running speed up with intervals and repeats. (Repeats use more rest in between working sets, so not to accumulate to much lactic acid, but train the legs for speed. But first you should be able to run the distance very easily. 1 km is like a sprint, when it comes to distance running. So it is very short, but it wont work for you if you find the distance hard. So work up to finding 5 km easy, then 1 km will feel more like a sprint.)
I looked at your profile. Congratulations on the 20 lbs you've lost!
It will be easier to run if you lose more weight first.
I don't know what sort of diet you are on, but you might want to try a "Slow Carb Diet" which promises 20 lbs weight loss in 30 days. The details can be found here:
Sorry about not finishing my thought before, I was on my IPad and it wouldn't let me in the message body. Anyways, I looked at your profile and saw that you are a bit overweight. You can do this, but 1K is just the start. You'll need to do 1.5 miles twice a year for the whole time you are in the military.... If you don't, they WILL kick you out. ...don't let the recruiters tell you differently. You'll need to do push up and situps too.
If you want this to be a career, you need some serious life style changes - diet and exercises. You CAN do this. ...but you need to commit to it now. Best of luck to you!
