The 4-Hour Body - Cheat Day vs Cheat Meal

Hey guys,

Thanks for all the support in this group, it has been helpful in answering some questions and motivating me to stick with this.

I am curious about the pros and cons of a cheat day vs. a cheat meal. I gained 4.8 pounds on cheat day and it took me 5 days to lose that back. My total weight loss in 11 days is 6.2 pounds so I am still very pleased with the results so far.

I asked a friend of mine, who is a health nut, what he thought of the slow carb diet Tim outlines. He said it was right on, but recommends a cheat meal instead of a cheat day.

Curious what you think, especially if you have been doing this diet for a long time.

So my specific questions are.

Does a cheat meal still give you enough of the spike your body needs keep from hitting a plateau?

If so, why cheat all day?

Look forward to your feedback.

Conrad

I've been thinking of scaling back the cheat day myself after a couple pretty big weeks. It often doesn't feel awesome the next day.

Hello All..

I am heading into week 3 of the SCD and am already down 15.5lbs minus 3lbs yoyo from yesterdays free day.. my love for the Craft Brew kinda makes the backward slide once a week a bit high I think but so far I am pleased and very surprized by the drastic results I have acheived in a short time..I have tried a few other things that worked also0 but were a huge hassle for me but this is super simple and easy to follow... I cant wait to see what happens!

Net40by40- Thank you for giving me some permission to forgive myself my 'slow progress'. I'm reading how people are dropping the pounds like crazy and I can't help but beat myself up after my 'slow' weight loss of 5.5lbs in about two weeks.

Earlier this week I was ready to pack it in... but thanks to some great motivation from this forum I am going to stick with it!!!

Oh- and I have to have a cheat day vice a cheat meal. I feel I owe myself a whole day. How's that for narcissism? :)

Embrace the Yo-Yo

Something that hasn't yet clicked for a few people yet... how long did it take you to get fat in the first place?

I'll be willing to wager that it did not happen overnight?

Almost every single ounce of "weight" that you retain for a short time after overfeeding is due to the mass of food & the additional liquid that high carbs demand, sitting in your digestive tract.

Not all of that is, nor can be converted to fat and stored, it's just not possible.

"Damage control" will help ensure that even less will be stored than what would be ordinarily. At least that is what part of Damage Control does, the other part is ensuring that greater amounts are stored in muscle tissue, rather than in fat.

"Drinking Massive Quantities of Water" will help "flush" it sooner.

Even though it is referred to as a "day"; Tim's suggestion is that breakfast for that Treat Day, that all important meal, is still a 4HB slow-carb meal.

Embrace the yo-yo. :)

Same thing on my first cheat day

I had a similar experience my first cheat day, it took me until Thursday to get the weight all back off, so I pretty much lost a week. The next week I still cheated to my heart's content (mmm, craft-brewed IPA), but ate closer to 3000 calories (I normally eat 1500 on this WOE) rather than the probably 5000 the week before). This week I was back to precheat weight by Monday and am losing rapidly again like I did the first week. I am an analyst at heart, and love Tim's body hacker perspective. I do the same - I track everything I eat and all the workouts I do here on Daily Burn not because I have to, but because I am looking for what works and what doesn't. I refuse to be a big blob of low hanging fruit anymore. First and foremost, I do what works - and track what I am doing to figure out what doesn't.

I couldn't tell you with absolute certainty. Remember that part of the "cheat day" is psychological ... it helps you deal with your cravings, as well as helping keep your metabolism up.

In the book, Tim says that most men can get by with one cheat meal, and that most women can't. I'd say that if you're concerned about it, scale back your next cheat day by one meal and see how it goes. If that works OK, you could stick with that, or try to scale back again to one meal, but if you find the subsequent week that it's too hard to get the weight back off, you'll have your answer.

Alternatively, try to do more of the "Damage Control" protocol in the book and see if that helps. The first week I did that and only gained 1.2lbs. The next week I didn't and gained 2.8lbs. (I don't go -too- crazy on my cheat day.)
