P90X Complete Workout - Suggestions Anyone?

I've had the P90X DVDs for a while now, but had originally gotten them for my wife. They were a little much for her, but now that she's dropped 60 pounds doing WeightWatchers, I really wanna get fit for her. I was going to get started last week with P90X, and did the first video... half of it, anyway. I pushed myself too hard and lost the chicken dinner I ate earlier in the night. Also, being sore for 4 days was kinda killer.

So, my delima is this: do I stick with the classic program or go lean to cut some fat first? I'm 5'11", 160 lbs, but full length mirrors scare the hell outta me. LoL

Any thoughts and opinions would be greatly appreciated. :-)

Take it Slow, and Modify

Whether you do Lean or Classic, the workouts are still fairly intense. Whichever one you decide to stick it out with, start small, and slowly build up. If you go conservative and do curls with a very light weight to start with, for example, that's fine. Then, gradually add more weight each week until the last couple of reps in your target range is challenging enough. If you need to pause or stop a PlyoX move before 30 seconds are up, because you really need to catch your breath, then just do it and plan on making an incremental improvement next time. There's a reason the program lasts 90 days, not 7 days.

I think it's also very important to write everything down, so that you know what your goal is for the next workout to make gradual progress. Write down all your reps and weight used, and other helpful notes. If you stumbled on a particular move, no biggie. Note it, and move on. You can do better next time. If you had to modify a move, that's OK. Note that as well. And, record everything even for those workouts where they did not provide a worksheet. Make your own or use the ones created in DailyBurn.

I started out last year in the Classic program like a bat out of hell, pushing myself very hard. After the first week, I thought I was gonna die. I did feel pretty good by phase 2, but had to quit by phase 3 because of injury. After 5 months off from any exercise, I restarted just after New Year's. But, I started out smaller, and progressed slower, writing everything down so that I can actually see progress, or learn from "failures". I'm halfway through, and the results are noticeable and measurable. I was not perfect, but I keep trying within reason to do better than the last week.

Good luck, and "bring it"!
