I guess I'm, as of writing this, the newest addition to Geeks Unite.

I'd just like to take the opportunity to say "Hi all!" and note that this is actually quite a large group! Goodie!

Now, what makes me a geek? Hmm.

I'm a larper. I don't think it gets nerdier than that. I haven't larped in years but I still consider myself a larper because I would go if I could just get this work/life balance under control.
RPG-er. I admit, I've never been a DM - just a playah.
Civ fanatic since it was just a glimpse in Sid Meier's eyes.
Risk (the board game) fanatic before Sid Meier got his glimpse but I'm not supposed to do that anymore because I'm such a poor loser.
I'm a statistical programmer for clinical research. I guess that makes me more of a math geek than a comp geek and that's fair. I have set up networks but never built my computer from scratch. That's a project for this year, maybe?
I read like a mofo. Although I'll read mostly anything (and truth be told, I actually didn't enjoy LOTR very much) so that might not be geek specific. I'm more of a Fantasy fan than Sci-Fi - unless it's really good Sci-Fi.

Random info: I'm pro Snape, think Starship Troopers made a much better film than book, I ship Ivanhoe/Rebecca and frankly think Rowena is a wet rag whom literature would have been better without, I'm Swedish but I live in the UK.

I'm not an Anime fan per se - I can see there are a lot of avid Anime Otakus here and I am nowhere near that dedication - but am slightly obsessed with Totoro and Azumangah Dai-Oh. For example: I bring my lunch to work in an official Totoro bento, which a friend bought for me when he visited Studio Ghibli. The fact that I make a distinction between that one and the exact same bento which can be ordered online tells me I probably care a bit more than the average cartoon fan. I find it makes the _perfect size_ for a healthy lunch. (With a sit-down job I don't need a big lunch.)

I game but not to the extent where I'd call myself a gamer. And believe me, I would if I thought I could get away with it. Gamer chicks are chic but my gamer creds simply aren't there. Since I have very little time I enjoy games with "endings" I can't really get sucked into an mmorpg so no WoW or Skyrim for me (sob). I really enjoyed Heavy Rain and Assassin's Creed and like all casual gamers I enjoyed Monkey Island, Sid Meier's Pirates and my personal favourite: Grim Fandango. Mostly I play fighting games, e.g Blaz Blue because that's what I can fit in.

Cheers all! I'm looking to you guys to help keep me motivated. Gadget tips are appreciated as is funny gym kit. I try to wear my nerd cred on my sleeve at the gym - i.e I work out in geek tees. My dream is that Sanrio will one day sell a series of Hello Kitty Kettlebells.

1. I'm a student in Mechanical Engineering, entering my senior year.

2. I will quote comedians/British comedy several times when I'm with friends, and maybe only 1 or 2 will understand it. At that point, we quote stuff back and forth just to screw with everyone else.

3. I skipped 8th grade and am only 19 years old, but going to finish college soon.

I'm pretty sure geek is in my blood. My parents raised me on Star Trek AND Star Wars. I've always been into both sciences and art. I'm a huge sci-fi geek. Doctor Who and BSG are counted! Well it all started in 1997, when my father got us a playstation. He bought my brother FF7, and myself Parasite Eve. After playing Eve up until the part where the dog splits into three... (at which point I promptly threw my controller and ran away screaming) my brother and I switched games.

Thats when I fell headlong into RPGs.

And then when I got on dial up and searched for FF7 I noticed that all this fanart was of a certain style.... kinda like, dragon ball z, or sailor moon. Oh, that stuff is called anime? I can get more?

And thus a RPG/Anime geek was born.

Nowadays I don't watch much anime, and I've broadened into more genre of games, but thats how it all began *tear*

General scifi tv (working my way through battlestar gallactica again) and books. I also knit, sew, bake, etc. used to do graphics but my laptop needs repairs and it contains all my software. *cry*

Hubby likes to joke that my weight loss (30lbs at this point) directly correlates with my disgust of the latest xpac with WoW.

Been working in IT for over 15 years and have more certs then I care to mention. I have a BS in IT Security and just started on my Master's. I spend more time at the keyboard then I do on the couch but it has the same effect.

I have a GPS HRM, iPhone, Withings scale, and a ZEO sleep clock. If it plugs in I have it. But it all comes down to getting off my *** and doing the workouts.

Ha. If that were all. I love Fantasy and Sci-fi the most. Into martial arts, anime, cg animation, gaming (PS3, MMORPG's, Strategy,...etc), computers (I consider my cell my portable laptop that can make phone calls and has a led light), and MATH. Got into the gym in university. Nothing like a geek/nerd with big biceps and a chest bigger then his girlfriends.

As Randall once said, I I got a lot more interested in excersize once I made the connection between it and leveling up, that probably explains it best.

I have an abundant knowledge about computers. I'm in the Academy of Information Technology and Robotics at my school I'm also on the Robotics team as a programmer and I do some of the engineering. I take PC Support and Game Simulation and Design classes and last year I took a programming class which I intend to do again next year. Also I play EVE Online, those are just a few of the things that make me a geek/nerd :)

Do NOT make me drag out my 2nd Ed. D&D rule book. I have a few characters that have made it to "Epic" status because I've been playing them for ages... Converted to the new rule sets each time. Sigh.....

I've written a few games... One was a satirical poke at the developers of anyother game... I made them into the "evil" characters.... The best armor in the game was Ethel Mermen's bath robe and the best weapon and the only one that would kill the BBEG (and, incidentally, lead developer from the other game) was big, purple, and took D-cells.

I love anime. Just made my SO watch Cowboy Beebop and Hellsing with me - because I felt like he needed to see them. I haven't made him watch Gundam yet :)

In exchange, he's teaching me Muay Thai.

And that's just what I'm willing to talk about in public.... it gets ever so much worse.... :p

One of my favourite workout tracks is "All along the watchtower" from Battlestar Galactica. I've turned down social engagements because I felt like a Star Trek Voyager marathon. My favourite X-box games are Final Fantasy and Magic: the Gathering. I often find myself contemplating who would win a fight between 'x' and 'y' Marvel Character. Comic Books (Marvel, mostly), RPGs (D&D, Shadowrun, Mechwarrior), Amateur Astronomy (currently building a telescope), Computing (IT Professional, built a MAME cabinet), Reading classic literature, Movies and Film!!!....oh yeah, and (most recently) completely geeking out with my nutrition and new-found love of bodybuilding.

I used to do PC/Console gaming, but I sold all that stuff, got a gym membership instead. Best decision I ever made.

I just spent the last three hours trying to find the open rely on an exchange server across teh country that was dumping about 30K junk spam mails out every half hour. The reason it makes me a geek is the whoop i let out when we found it :D Stupid junk mail hackers got nothing better to do than search for open fricking relays... While my geekier days are a bit behind me (used to be a programmer and linux enthusiast - remember when there was the 1.x tree??), I'm still very much a geek at the core. I started out early, so much so that i can tell you about the days of Trashy 80s, commodores, 468 DXes and the like. While my job has me knee deep in tech at any given day, I'd have to say i'm a lot less geeky that most of my comrades.

Into the standard geek fare such as video games (when is Diablo 3 coming out already blizz??), fine art photography, tinkering with things that are curious, music, art, science, etc.

Now I've turned my attention to lifting and enjoying every minute of it. Was a WoW addict, but now find much more enjoyment min/maxing my workout regiment and dietary needs :D

Favorite exercises include deadlifts, dips, powercleans, and rowing.

I'm actually looking for a workout buddy at the moment. If anyone in South Fla is doing the gym thing, hit me up.

I grew up with computer games, reading fantasy and sci-fi, playing Titan and Talisman. When my brother was watching Wrestlemania, I was playing "Chesslemania" with my friend. In my teenage years, I developed a small comic book collection.

I now work as a kind of technical dilettante (or Jack of All Trades, if you prefer) focusing on SQL servers, scripts of many kinds, and creating solutions to people's problems using whatever tools are available.

Over the past few years, I've taken up watching anime (initially as a way to bond with my daughter). I still read fantasy and sci-fi.

I also have a fairly sizable board game collection (approximately 130 different board and card games), and host a bi-weekly gathering at my house to play them.

In the late 90's, I started messing around with Red Hat Linux. Near the turn of the millenium, I built my first Gentoo system. My preferred linux distribution is Linux Mint now. Since I want to watch Bluray discs and play games, I rarely use Linux nowadays (aside from a laptop at work).

I held off on getting a smartphone until I sensed that Android had hit critical mass in terms of OS maturity and hardware power. Now I have a Droid X, and I love it =)

I haven't had cable for many years. I was in the Hulu beta, and now use it and Netflix Watch Instantly (along with some torrents) to give me more useful TV than I ever had with cable (700 channels and nothing to watch). Of course, my "desktop" computer is hooked up to a 40" LCD in my bedroom (hanging on a dual articulated wallmount) which I control from my hammock with a wireless keyboard and mouse, as well as a remote control.

I think one of the defining aspects of being a geek is really "geeking out" on something, and not being held in check by societal mores. Be it exercise, diet, books, games, or whatever passion strikes me, I seek it out, research it, and experiment with it.

MBTI calls me an INTP.

I'm a computer scientist and love to explore cool stuff (like networks and user interfaces) and create little programs (I just published a website called CraigNotes which lets you track, rate, and take notes on your favorite Craigslist ads!).

I also like to run, take photographs, and read books which makes others' eyes roll (books on math [Fermat's Enigma], lighting [Light: Science & Magic], or physiology [Lore of Running]).

Getting my first computer (a ZX81) at age 8 and writing games when magazines used to come with listings.
I'm a database manager for the NHS.
I'm a girl gamer and played MMO's ever since Everquest 1, currently in World of Warcraft, LotRO and others. Also love pretty much anything by Bioware.
I own a collectors edition lightsaber :)
I have more computers, camera's and other gadgetry than one person can ever use.
I've written and had published a sourcebook for a PnP RPG game.

I'm OCD about everything, including the latest hobby fitness. A Garmin, a logger program and endless analysis of my pi$$ poor performance R me.

Well, to start with I am a graphic designer, mostly I do fix old photos one pixel at a time, and I own a business in remote tech support. I just recently got back into playing WoW after a year long break, and I love playing table top games mostly DnD. I also own the game counsels xbox 360 and Wii. I will admit I am addicted to any of the Rayman Raving Rabbids games they just crack me up seeing the rabbits get hurt. Let's see as far as music goes I like anything, except country. What makes me a geek?

Well I love video games, all of them, I can still plug in the Atari 2600, NES, and SNES now and then. Play the PC, Wii, and XB360 more often though. I play D&D, that alone should be enough. Love B moves, Army of Darkness, UHF, Spaceballs, you get it. I make my money being an electrician, but for a hobby I program in C and C++. 5 computers at home...I live alone. A more complex network in my apartment than here at work (didn't build the one here at work).

Love Scifi...I rank the big S's in this order: 1. Star Trek 2. Stargate 3. Star Wars, and yes I've tried all of the MMO's attached to those (damn you SOE!).

Jailbroken iPhone...Apple restricts things too much.

Play lots of video games and I usually have a couple of MMO's going at any one time (especially now since I'm a lifer for Star Trek Online). In addition to my PC's I have a 360 and PS3. PC gets the most use.

What makes me a geek? I read/collect comic books, collect comic book figures, wear comic book t-shirts and belts, and have a witchblade poster displayed in my livingroom, not to mention the others displayed elsewhere. I worked in a vidoe game store for 6 years and have an entire room devoted to the 'video game collection.' And yes, Final Fantasy rules!!! I do enjoy anime, but I don't watch it that often.

I am a video game geek first and foremost. Have been since I got my first NES on my 5th birthday. My reward for eating right and working out is a few guilt free hours of Xbox face time. I'm 'perryjoyce' on there too, add me if you're looking for a challenge!
I am a music geek. I don't play as much as I used to, but I am always always always surrounded by something new, old, or in-between. My favorite genres are alt-country and luscious, literate indie-pop.

* I work in Quality Assurance for a computer game company. Testers are their own special flavour of geekiness.

* I play computer games. Lots of them. RPGs, RTSs, TBSs, simulators, adventures, MMOs.

* Oooh, shiny! Comic books! I wrote my university thesis on comic books and their relationship with film. My favourites are the Vertigo kind.

* Books. I've been an avid reader since the age of 5, so much so that my dad had to lock up my books in a futile attempt to get me out of the house. I picked the lock and kept reading. For the past few years it's been mostly sci-fi/fantasy, but I also love classical literature, mythology and history of religions.

* Steampunk.

* Pen&paper games. Started with D&D, now it's mostly Whitewolf stuff (we have a game of Exalted and one of Mage running in the office at the moment).

* (tentatively) Anime/Manga: I've watched/read a few some years ago, I liked most of it, but overall not a big fan of them.

At Home I experiment with building circuits for my solar power backup system, and have been building new lower power light fixtures for use with my 12V solar power system. (Hobby = geek)

I love video games, and Sci Fi. Including really old cheesy B&W Sci Fi where you can see the cables and what not. (GEEK!)

I like to experiment with changing the speed I drive to work each week, and record the average milage to figgure out what milage I get at a given speed. (Green Geek?)

I'm a geek because I read science news, prefer Ubuntu to Vista (though I've become awful fond of OS X too), can compile and install software from source (and can apt-cache search for a life, too), know how to use Apache directives, use vi on my Mac desktop for everything, love open source software, get excited about learning anything new, love books, am socially awkward, and like to write code occasionally.

I'm a total nerd (4.0 student through high school and university). I read constantly. I'm a literature person by trade but scifi/fantasy/horror is my brain candy. I played DnD and other tabletops throughout my youth but outgrew the ability to find the time and people my age willing to play. I read comics, play video games (currently FF Tactics A2 on DS), talk to my 5 cats as if they were people (they are), and become obsessed with random subjects like Buddhist philosophy, and I spend way too much time on things like Facebook Mafia Wars, organizing my bookshelf on Shelfari, etc. I'm a 35 year old mom, and if anyone needs a support/email buddy, I'd love to connect with a fellow geek.

Let's see.....I have been playing World of Warcraft online since beta testing. I attended BlizCon and spend way too much money on a sweatshirt, but my husband wouldn't let me wait in line for 4 hours to get a stuffed murlock. I love bad Sifi movies...anyone see "Rock Monster"? My husband and I have back to back computer desks in the same room but still talk to each other through ingame chat rather than just turning around. I try to hid it by being cute and fashionable but that is really a struggle :)

Geekiness implies passion, sure. But passion does not necessarily imply geekiness IMHO. There is more of a social connotation to being a "geek." Perhaps we get the word confused with "nerd", but "geek" implies a certain lack of social ability/awareness, IMHO. Sort of the opposite of "cool" in the Steve McQueen sense of the word. But that is also what makes "geeks" cool. Because geeks aren't really trying. Steve McQueen might not have tried to be cool - he just was cool. And geeks don't try to be cool either...they care more about the things they are into. It's everyone else that is posing. ;)

I know my way around the web and social media but I'm not particularly technically savvy, nor am I a gamer. I LOVE video games. I couldn't stop playing FFXII and now I can't put down Assassin's Creed. I'm so into it that I've decided to only read books about the crusades this summer. I think it will fit nicely with my summer course on the history of the visual culture of the Middle East.

Honestly, I always thought a geek was anyone who was super passionate about anything. Doesn't have to be video games, rpgs or anime. Like I would consider myself an architecture geek. I'm already planning a trip to Chicago to see the new modern wing of the Art Institue. Isn't a foodie a food geek? Etc..

I can tell you which two pantheons were removed from Deities and Demigods, and why.

I read SF almost exclusively. I do toss in a good fly-fishing book now and then.

I never asked a girl out in high school. Or college.

I didn't go to my Senior Homecoming dance.

Even though I played football in high school (and college), I once had a group of girls come up to me after a football game and ask me if I went to the football game. Grr.

Welll... I love scifi/fantasy and horry. I love anything dealing with history. Especially ancient history. I would read my humanities and art textbooks for fun! I am currently going to school fro Forensics in Bio-CHemistry and Psychology. I would like to be a Forensic Archaeologist/Anthropologist, but there is no schooling for it here. So, I just have to study up on it for fun!

I also love role playing, online or IRL. I wish there were some gaming dungeons around here. But, no one plays!!

Have you ever visited Crunchyroll.com for anime? You should check out Mom's Life (Mainichi Kaasan). There's only one episode available for public viewing on the site right now, the second will be up soon. The third episode is currently airing in Japan (Crunchyroll gets the new stuff up fast).

I totally agree with your suggestion.

I am about 3/4 of the way through FF XII myself. The boss fights were getting a bit to epic to be a good play after work game which killed it a bit for me. Have you ever tried FF X-2 the one with Yuna as the star? It was panned by many FF fans because it was too light and goofy compared to other Final Fantasy games. I love it because it is light and goofy ^_^

There is something else I should add, I am a sucker for free MMO games. So if anyone wants to play Megaten, PuzzlePirates, Mabinogi, Perfect World, Sword of the New World or just about anything else, let me know.

I am pretty well set up in Kingdom of Loathing so if anybody needs a newbie care package let me know.

Man, I gotta finish FFXII. My thesis got in the way at the time and then I never got back on. I also bought a Wii...that's a good distraction for a bit. I recall Balthier being my favorite though. :)

And man, has anyone else noticed the forum function on this site is kinda...nonsensical? No reply function? No way to see the thread when you're writing up your post? There's a good suggestion to drop in the box...
