Geeks Unite - Work out Music

Does anyone have certain music they listen to when they are working out? I have a very random list of music that keeps me pretty well motivated.

Dubstep is an amazing genre, it has a little bit of every other genre. Its generally set to 140bpm and you can count it half time at 70bpm if you'd like.

Here is a whole bunch of streamable/downloadable mixes. www.n3k4.com

It's what aliens would work out to.

Muzak~

When I'm lifting weights I just hit play all and go with whatever comes on, but I need certain songs when I'm running, typically anything with a fast beat to set my feet to.

Eminem- Lose Yourself - This one is pretty awesome, I used to pick it when I'm was the last leg of my run ("You only get one shot, do not miss your chance to blow, when opportunity knocks it's once in a lifetime") That song got me through my intial begin runs when I was doing a mile and a half in like, 14 minutes haha.

Jam Project - Omoide wa Okkusen: this song I only put on when I'm going to attempt to sprint all out for the entire length of the song (3:56). I haven't managed it yet, hahaha.

Bass Hunter - "Boten Anna" and his other song "DOTA": I put these songs on loops when I'm doing my mile and half for my PT evaluation (Military). The steady beat keeps me going strong and I ace it if I just match the songs pace.

Rancid - Maxwell Murder: this song is only 1:25 in length, and I like playing this song for my end sprint when I'm too tired to attempt to sprint Omoide wa Okkusen, hehe.

Those are the special songs I can think off the top of my head, Mostly when I'm just running to run I play a general playlist of fast rock or techno. Lots of anime songs on there, haha.

Wow.... Ummm....

I listen to a lot of beat-driven music - mostly techno, industrial, and hard house. Always have... picked up a taste for it when I was skateboarding.

Check out Crystal Method's first album Vegas. Or the Fight Club sound track by Dust Brothers. Or Tool or Endless Sporadic. Synthetic Fiend, DJ Euroz, Electra, Moby, Orbital (not to be confused with the much mellower Orb).

Add that to some hip-hop like the Beastie Boys, House of Pain and some reggaeon like Nando Boom Boom, Daddy Yankee, Don Omar. WARNING: DO NOT PLAY THIS IN FRONT OF ANYONE WHO SPEAKS SPANISH. THE LYRICS ARE VERY NAUGHTY!!!!

Don't get me wrong, I have mellower stuff including Brahm's 3rd symphony and Mozart's Dance of the Sugar Plum Fariy. But the question was what do you like to work to....

My workout music consists of anything on my mp3 player, but I tend to skip to the more energetic songs or songs I REALLY like. Sometimes I try to keep up with the beat on the elliptical machine. :P

Good workout artists for me are My Life With the Trill Kill Kult, Katzenjammer, Kaizers Orchestra, some assorted video game music (namely Guity Gear and Earthworm Jim), and anything else thats upbeat...ish.

Podrunner is great for a change

I usually listen to a set of music I create on my iPod. But sometimes I'm lazy and haven't updated my songs for awhile, and I get sick of it. At those times, I fall back on Podrunner podcasts. They're about 45-60 minutes of nonstop dance/electronic music by a DJ Steve Boyett (http://www.djsteveboy.com/podrunner.html). Dude must be a runner because just when I'm fizzling out at mile 4 on the treadmill, the music morphs into some energy-giving thing that keeps me going. Best of all: they're free. Second best of all: they're categorized by beats per minute. Not for everyone, but definitely worth checking out.

Genius Playlists

I use genius playlists on iTunes and adjust them to taste. This morning elliptical workout was brought to me by a book on my Kindle and music from Phoenix, Passion Pit, Spoon, Belle and Sebastian, The National and Broken Social Scene.

I usually don't kick the music in until half way through. A good beat is generally all I need.

Anyone Guess the Music Inspiration Here?

I used to listen to a bunch of rock, but with the workout, I like hearing a heavy drum beat/guitar hit. It gets me going harder. So I made up a playlist for my cardio:

Give It All - Rise Against
Bat Country - Avenged Sevenfold
Hysteria - Muse
Afterlife - Avenged Sevenfold
Almost Easy - Avenged Sevenfold
Peace Sells - MegaDeth
Panic Attack - Dream Theatre
Hammerhead - The Offspring
Welcome Home - Coheed & Cambria
Battery - Metallica
Prisoner of Society - The Living End
All That I've Got - The Used
Master Exploder - Tenacious D
The Sharpest Lives - My Chemical Romance
Dead! - My Chemical Romance
Me Aainst the World - Simple Plan
Hangar 18 - MegaDeth
Famous Last Words - My Chemical Romance

Anyone know where I got a majority of these songs from?

or there are also some good ones in itunes in the workout section

You can get good high tempo mixes, which help me when I run. I've also noticed if I listen to music I know (rock, etc) I'll start singing while I run and ruin my breathing. :)

I've found a podcast called FitMusic which plays good music to listen to when walking, it even has one tradk that's set to 135 beats per minute.

Cheesy All the way

For me, it's got to be the cheesy music. Music you listen to and roll your eyes, but it's got that beat.

Some examples on my current training/workout playlist:

Right now - Van Halen

Final Countdown - Europe

Going the Distance - Cake

Push it to the limit - Scarface Soundtrack

Danger Zone - Kenny Loggins

You're the best - Joe Esposito

I've got other songs, but those are usually the ones I start with to get revved up. (Oh, that reminds me of another one "Revv Me Up" by Jasper McVain)

Nightwish is perfect IMHO. Friend introduced me to them, it's Opera Metal. Good stuff really, and I've been very happy about listening to it lately.

Some good music

If I could listen to music while working out it'd be some old school 90's alternative that actually meant something, there are certain key features you remember as growing up, and listening to music that represent a certain time in your life can really get you motivated. But-I'd also listen to some good trance, that always gets me going and I feel good listening too it. I don't have an ipod or an mp3 player so I listen to the world around me-Such as the birds chirping, the wind howling past me and the dogs barking as I run past their territoy. It's rather pleasant.

it varies:

I tend to go for rock and alternative. Lately I've been listening to Flobots "Fight with Tools." -- I really like music with a message.

Hey

I totally agree with BeFitt. I love listening to soundtracks, and of course you have a very large specter of musical genre. Otherwise I listen to artists who have the rhythmic, who make me faster as Korn, Daft Punk, etc.

Soundtracks!

Nothing beats soundtrack music... Themes from Last of the Mohicans, Mortal Kombat, Fast and the Furious are all great. And my favorite - Run Lola Run (the entire CD is an adrenaline HIGH!) I'd highly recommend it.

But music can get expensive... so sometimes I'll go to ccmixter.org and podsafeaudio.com and download some great stuff for free since they are creative commons. :)

AmieStreet.com is also good in terms of finding up and coming artists... you can usually find songs anywhere from FREE to 98 cents.

Podcasts

I listen to weight-loss podcasts while I'm working out. It keeps me on track, because I'm apt to make excuses and leave a mile or two early. Though I do feel like a hypocrite when I whine about listening to talk radio in my boyfriend's car.

It's gotta be loud

The music they play in the gym is horrid. I have pretty eclectic musical tastes but for lifting I usually load the rock n' roll or something loud enough to drown out the gym music. Lately it has been really heavy stuff. I loaded The Ocean, Intronaut, Neurosis, The Sword, Shadows Fall & Irreversible last night.

Daft Punk and iTunes+Genius

I have found that with repetition I like songs with words less and less for working out. I have been listening to a lot of Daft Punk (techno), and found a DJ I really like (Digiki, his "Polypunk" feed is at http://www.maudevintage.com/castellane/digiki/polypunk/polyfeed.xml).

Following the post about Tangerine, the 8.x release of iTunes has built-in the Genius app, which takes a base song a generates a playlist out of what you have available a la Pandora. It keeps me from getting into a rut.

Tangerine

I'm a mac-geek. (since 85).

My favorite 'music-toy' ATM is Tangerine, which basicallly, after a couple of params* are set, creates sets/playlists from one's iTunes' library that are pretty much spot on.

* Length/Duration of playlist, Beats per Minute, and Beat Intensity.

80's music just really does it for me. :-) Good driving rock anthems make running almost easy.

I could row for miles on Michael Jackson "Black or White".

My top pick for a slower jog: Most of the Bee Gees.

And for something slightly more recent you can't go past Nickelback. I can push the mental barrier for that 30 minute run (tough for me!!) almost every time with "Savin' Me".
