Help a Crossfit noob

Subject Description

I really want to get into CrossFit, but I'm lost. Is there a great book or site just for beginners? There's a few places here in Chicago that do Crossfit training, but they cost almost $200 a month! That's way out of my range. I'm hoping for something I can do at home or at the Y, by myself but I don't get any of the words and acronyms I see.

Crossfit.com

Check out Crossfit.com and subscribe to the Crossfit Journal online ($25 a year). They have daily workouts and lots of how to videos. You can do crossfit anywhere if you have the skills. If you can't afford a membership, sign up for a intro skills series of classes and then you can workout at the Y or another gym. The nice thing about crossfit is no machines - just weights, pull up bar, jump rope and area to run. Many people set up their own boxes in a back yard or a garage. Good luck, it's the best! I am starting year 5 and went from a fat 248 to a trim 170 and I'm 62.

Form is king

Some boxes run foundation courses that last a few weeks and you can learn whats its about and most important to get your form right on the lifts.

When your working the lifts at a high pace form is very important, once you have this right you can do the WOD's at home or in a regular gym.

Cheers

Info

a lot of the crossfit gyms post the workouts for the day. There are a lot of youtube videos to show you proper instructions. Also it would help if you did the fundamental training at the local crossfit gym just to understand the lingo and movements. A lot of the fundamental training is free or a one time fee.

Thanks

Great advice. I called a place that does exactly what you are saying... a kind of boot camp to learn the basics. I'm going to check it out next week. I also checked out some of the videos on the crossfit site...intimidating!...but it looks like fun too.

thx!
