MetaFilter - 100 pushups

Hey Mefites!

I don't want to join a gym, and I don't have any equipment, but I do want to get into shape and lose some weight, so I'm interested in doing these:

http://hundredpushups.com/

http://www.twohundredsitups.com/

http://www.twohundredsquats.com/

It seems like the challenges aren't really set up for this type of thing though... I can set a challenge on "most pushups by [date]" or "complete 10,000 pushups overall," but not "do 100 pushups in one stretch".

Ideas? Anyone interested?

I'll try this

Hey all! I didn't get this started on 1/1 (traveling and such) but I finally signed up today. I'm interested in doing the pushups "challenge", and maybe the squats too (although my knees can barely hold myself up!) so count me in on this one. I'll start out this evening after work.

started the workouts!

I did the initial tests for the three programs 2 days ago and I'm still sore from it. :)

Results:

- not even 1 real pushup, and less than 5 knee pushups

- 49 situps

- 83 squats

So today I did this:

- pushups: Week 1, Day 1, Level 1 (knee pushups, successful!)

- situps: Week 1, Day 1, Level 3

- squats: Week 3, Day 1, Level 2

I'm so sore I've been cursing everytime I need to go up or down stairs for the last two days! Ha! But I'm glad I'm doing this.

I started on the 200 sit-ups challenge yesterday. Hadn't realised the difference that bending the knees makes (I've always done sit-ups with legs straight) - much harder work with knees bent, but probably easier on the back in the long run.

I started doing 5 real pushups and am now up to about ten without struggling. It takes time, but it comes easier the more you do.

"Real" pushups

hakerann,

Don't get hung up on the fact that you can't do pushups from the full plank position. I gained significant strength doing "girl" pushups for a very long time. I had great arms and did 20 reps between weight lifting to keep my heart rate up. Never did graduate to real ones.

As long as you are doing them as best you can, you will see a difference. Just keep working consistently until you are able to do a full pushup if that's a goal for you. You will get there.

Good luck!

amandaudoff, how are you finding it? I just did the initial test yesterday and I cannot even do ONE "real" pushup. I get down about half-way and my arms collapse. Embarrassing!

I set up a "workout" for myself with squats, crunches, and (knee) pushups, so at least I can track it now.

If you look up workouts rather than challenges, you might find them or maybe you could create one. I found this http://dailyburn.com/workout_programs/31626-One-Hundred-Push-ups just by looking at the "find workouts" page, so maybe someone's done the others as well? They look like good programs, either way.
