Well....I own walking poles, because my sister gave them to me, but to be honest I thought I might look a bit daft using them, because I don't exactly do challenging walks.  I'm more the stroll-in-the-country type of walker.

Recommendation for walking poles/sticks

About two years ago my son encouraged me to try them when we were hiking on lots of very steep slopes carrying backpacks.  To appease him I tried them, and to my surprise they worked very well.  My knees, which usually get puffy and achy after a long down hill trek, did not suffer.  Also, since then I managed to cause myself to have a very bad ankle sprain that ripped many of my ligaments and has made my balance become not so great.  The poles make it very easy to walk on uneven surfaces at the pace I want to walk without fear of twisting my ankle.  So, I would recommend them.
