Great Group! Thanks, kingloud, for making this group. My husband (JuryDuty) and I are trying to change the way we eat, but I've been a little nervous that we'll have to give up yummy food for endless servings of baked chicken breasts. Don't get me wrong, I love chicken, but come on. I know myself well enough to know that I'll start dreaming of diving headfirst into a supersized helping of chips and queso or an ice cream sundae or a Bennigan's burger and fries or... you get the idea! --Gena M Posted by GenaM on Jun. 13, 2008 at 03:30PM |

Cooking Light RecommendationGena, you said you were worried about endless baked chicken. No need for that. My wife and I have lost about 30lbs a piece over the last six months or so and a big part of that has been Cooking Light magazine. They have a bunch of great, yummy recipes every month and they include nutritional information for each one. One thing to watch out for is that while each recipe is generally healthy as a stand-alone, you have to keep an eye on combining it into a menu for a meal. Check your local library. Cooking Light puts out annual recipe compilations as a book and getting one of those is a great place to start. Posted by markduprey on Jun. 15, 2008 at 06:42AM |

Cooking Light recipesExcellent suggestion Mark! I'll definetly have to check that out. When you make one of those recipes, how are you logging it in gyminee? Do you create a new food item with the nutrition information from the recipe, or do you search through the database for each ingredient. Please let us know the next time you try one of the recipes. I'm very interested in sharing food ideas and finding an easy way to enter them in our food diaries. Note: Message has been edited by group admin. Posted by kingloud on Jun. 15, 2008 at 11:50AM |

Entering recipesGenerally, I've been creating them as a food instead of as a recipe.
So what I have been doing is creating it as a food, looking up the recipe on Cookinglight.com and putting the url in the description. I forgot to mention that Cooking Light has ALL their recipes available online for free. So there's no need to get the magazine or books, it's just easier to browse the magazine or book. Entering recipesI agree, entering recipes takes way to long, as I mentioned before, the search function is just crap. However it did occur to me that pro users might benefit from using recipes in their meal planner as it would add the individual items to their shopping list. Can any of you Pro users confirm that? As for the copyright issue; a list of ingredients does not violate a copyright as long as you do not use any of the descriptions of the preparation or techniques. ... but they probably don't like me using their pictures That being said, I'll probably enter my future meals as "Food Items" as well.

Yes, as a pro user, I could create a shopping list easy from a recipe...but I'd probably wait until they get the food search worked out a little better. That's one of the weaknesses of Gyminee right now and I'm sure it'll improve soon. Posted by JuryDuty on Jun. 16, 2008 at 01:42PM |

Workaround for food search while entering recipeI agree that the food item search (especially during recipe creation) is exasperating! Probably the most poorly implemented search I've ever seen anywhere. But I do like using recipes because I do create my own from scratch and also find it useful when creating entire meals (combos of several foods or recipes) that I eat together often. My Workaround: Open two windows: one with the recipe you're creating/editing; the other with your favorite foods. When you can't find one of your own favorite foods, just edit that food in your second window and add your user name or other temporary word marker to the name of the food. Save and search again in your recipe window for the marker. Once you've added the item to your recipe, change the name of the item back to normal. A pain, but it works. Thanks setfire for that feedback, and welcome to the group! I agree that the search engine is weaK, and I do think that recipes(an array of food itmes) should be stored as recipes. The feature just needs a better implementation, like item substitutions or omitions. More on that at this forum. Setfire, do you have any recipes that you've added that you can recommend to the group? Posted by kingloud on Jun. 17, 2008 at 07:14PM |

My recipes are pretty simpleNot really a gourmet... and still trying to lose weight and get the basics covered but I have a couple of my own recipes on my favorites list that some might enjoy. Other than the salmon they can be made ahead in batches and reheat very easily in the microwave:
I've lost over 20 pounds of fat (and added muscle) since February while eating these almost every day. Please let me know if you tried any of them or if you have suggestions. Posted by setfire on Jun. 18, 2008 at 02:20PM |
