I'm definitely open for some encouragement. I'm looking to lose 15-20 pounds. I would love to help motivate someone with some similar goals.

re:

Hey there - I just started following the diet in the 'body for life - for women' book and have lost 2 lbs a week consistently. It's def. all about my eating as I work out everday (usually take Sunday off). I'm also looking to loose 15-20 lbs, so I can tell you how it goes? Let me know what tips you have, too!

How's it going?

I am finally serious about losing some weight and need to lose about 40-45 lbs.  I'm frustrated starting out because no matter how much I work out, I'm not losing any weight.  I know it takes time for my body to adjust to the regimen and added muscle mass.  Plus, I have more of an appetite from all the activity.  I'm just curious from your experience how long it takes to start seeing results, assuming you keep to it.  What kind of progress have you all made?

blurdoogie

Hi Blurdoogie! I did a 'fitness challenge' at my gym last year and only lost 4lbs over the course of two months. However, I lost 6 inches off my waist, 4 of each thigh, gained an inch in my shoulders, etc., etc. Have you taken measurements? That is a huge motivator b/c in a month you may have only lost 3 lbs, but a lot of inches. There was a woman there who did it and only lost 5lbs, but lost something like 25 collective inches, had to get a whole new wardrobe, etc.

This time around I'm doing it differently, though. I notice that no matter how much I work out, if I'm still eating poorly (and I'm not talking fast food once a week - pretty healthy, just huge portions of pasta, etc.) I don't see results. It's all about keeping a food journal and measuring out what you eat, eating smaller, more frequent meals and having a carb and protein at every meal (adding a good fat like 20 peanuts or 1/4 avacado at 2 meals).

I think they say 2 lbs a week is healty - if you go over that, you might gain it all back when you have a month that isn't as good. The trainer at my gym seems to think that 1lb a week is the healthiest way to go. I also have friends who have done weight watchers, which seems to incredible when it comes to loosing weight and doing it relatively quickly at 2lbs a week.

Progress

As far as progress goes: I just started on the 2nd of January - I had a few days in there where family was in town and I didn't eat as well, but I am down 3lbs. I have been keeping a food journal, measuring portions and working out everyday (usually taking one day a week off) alternating weights and cardio.

The first few days of cutting my portions were hard, I was kind of headachy and felt really hungry. My body adjusted really quickly, though, (within days) and now I feel like I eat more than enough. Of course, I stick to it about 80% of the time, cutting myself some slack once or twicea week. Some people say eat what you want on Sundays (or whatever day you want off) and don't keep a food journal that day - while some say twice a week or so you can dip into something really yummy - but to stick with it 80%.

Hi, I just joined Gyminee today.  I took all the measurements etc, and boy am I not in CS/College anymore.

I have been doind weight watchers for months now and have gained weight.  Im finally ready to really challenge myself and not cheat on the program.

I love to work out, motivation is an issue.  And I am recovering from recent whiplash so Im not technically allowed to run, or do upper body stuff.

Any ideas?  I was thinking swimming with just a kick board...so far that's all I've been Ok'd to do.

Swimming is good

Swimming is a great exercise and allows for a lot of resistance.
What about a recumbent bike. Works your lower body without great stress on your upper body. Check it out here

"Mindless Eating"

I've just joined Gyminee, so forgive me if I'm jumping in here too fast, but the topic of weight loss and what diet works for whom is one that I've been thinking a lot about lately.

I'm currently reading "Mindless Eating: Why We Eat More than We Think We Do" by Brian Wansink, PhD. The basic premise is, as the title implies, that we consume a lot of calories unknowingly, without thinking about them -- from that morning mocchachino to the fistful of popcorn with the evening DVD. It makes a lot of sense to me, and I'm trying to become conscious of what I do eat, cutting back on the meaningless calories, rather than trying any of the deprivation diets. (I love food - preparing it, as well as eating it -- and I'm not ready to give  up butter and olive oil, or a good baked potato, though the Pepsi at lunch, or the midday junk food snack can go). If you want to more info about the book or the approach, the website is http://www.mindlesseating.org/.

New at this

Hi I'm a 36 year old mom of 2 and my goal is to lost 25 lbs.  I am currently doing the Hip Hop abs cardio videos 6 days a week and watching what I eat and reducing my portions.  I started on Feb 19th and I am down 3 lbs so far.  My problem is staying motivated.  I start an exercise program and 2 or 3 weeks later I give up.  I am looking for someone to motivate me when I feel like giving up.

Walking with poles

I walk for weight loss.  I read about nordic walking which is walking with poles ( not polish men).  it is supposed to increase the cardio demand resulting in greater calorie burn per unit of time and also reduce stree on the neck and back while providing some upper body work.

has anyone tried it?  Recommendations?
