Pilates - Tailbone

I tried pilates and it caused my tailbone great pain. I bruised it a couple of years ago but it should be healed by now. Does anyone else have this problem? Or am I just that bony?

Oh, yeah, big time. But there's a solution!

The trick is to use a nice cushy mat - and there are many thick mats on the market made especially for Pilates. It should be at least 1/2" thick. Most yoga mats are much thinner than this so you can feel the floor and balance better, but you spend a LOT more time on your back in a Pilates class. The extra-thick mats will cushion your spine in the rolling movements, and your tailbone as well. I used to get blisters on my tailbone and could only practice once every week or so. Now that I have a nice cushy 5/8" thick mat, I can practice every day. Thicker Pilates mats can be more expensive than a yoga mat, but there are some affordable brands. Stott makes a reasonable Pilates mat (it's on the short side, but is plenty thick), and I've seen it at Marshall's for $15 or $20. The "cadillac" of Pilates mats is the Airex mat. You can buy one for $75-$100 through the Power Pilates website (disclosure: I am a Power Pilates instructor).

Just remember - Pilates and yoga mats are not the same thing! It's much better to buy a mat inteded for Pilates than to make do with a yoga mat, if you intend to stick with Pilates.
