I went out to eat Indian last night. Totally off-primal. One of the dishes was totally spicy, but really tasty (and the only thing on the table!) so I kept on eating it. Aside from that, I had the indian bread and chicken tikka masala on a bed of rice. I paid for it in the bathroom this morning =p I also wasn't hungry this morning (I are at like 8:30 instead of my normal 6pm) so I didn't end up eating breakfast. I also have no idea how many calories I consumed yesterday, but I'm not sweating it.

    Primal

I've been kind of haphazardly managing my eating. I mostly cut out wheat recently, and while I'm not comfortable with the theological / ideological underpinnings of the paleo/primal crowd, I think their case is the strongest. Paleo is too closely bound with the ideology to be truly sensible, but Primal seems just about right.

    Smoothy

Made my first smoothy today: 1 dannon activa yogurt, 1/2 cup mixed frozen berries, 1 banana. I think this would be a great format to get my fish oil in, as well. My hand blender worked great for it (once I added a little extra water!). Drank it strait out of the mixing cup.

    Colonix status

I've been noticing a ton of black flakes in toilet lately. I think this is a good thing; perhaps a precursor to more cohesive expulsions. It may also be dried blood from my colon walls being expelled: I have cut out wheat recently and this may have allowed my walls colon to heal (it takes maybe 3 days I think) and the leftover blood to congeal internally and then be swept out by my fiber drink.

    Introduction & Overview

I'm almost a week into what seems like a "new life". I'm slowly building up my workout, focusing on regular push-ups complimented by body-weight squats (Hindu style) and Hindu push-ups (aka the Judo push-up here). I'd also like to incorporate a minor daily jog around the neighborhood in the morning: nothing too extensive, but enough to get my blood pumping and cardiovascular system working. I've also made major changes to my diet. For the past few years I've been eating at work: typically a bagel w/ cream cheese or yogurt+fruit+granola parfait or the occasional omelet in the morning, followed by whatever strikes my fancy for lunch (we've got quite the spread down there). When I'd get home I'd sometimes just snack or skip dinner, and sometimes I'd make myself something. The occasional desert as well. My diet has changed quite a bit since I decided to take control of it. I'm eating mostly raw fruits and vegetables now, regularly taking supplements (fiber, fish oil, green tea, multivitamin), and staying quite a bit under my recommended caloric intake on this site. I'm also taking into consideration the benefits of organic foods, when appropriate (meats, eggs, and some fruits and vegetables). One of the things I've been trying to cut out of my diet is wheat, and most other grains. I'm not being fanatical about this (except maybe wheat - I've stopped eating bread as well), and I probably need to do some more research on the subject. Along with all of this, I've started an colon cleansing program (leftover supplies of Colonix from the last time I did it some years back). The net effect is that I'm feeling some restored energy and have noticed that my belt is a little looser. I have been obsessively recording my food intake and exercise here on this site, and look forward to seeing trends and making necessary modifications. Reading "The Hacker's Diet" has been enlightening, to say the least. I've acquired a scale (haven't had one of those in years), a kitchen scale, a body-fat monitor, and body measuring tape. The fat monitor I thought was important because, while I do not intend to bulk up by any means, I do intend to be adding muscle to my frame through body-weight workouts and regain a more athletic build. Comparing the trend in body-fat to weight will be one way I can quantify the effectiveness of my workouts. Of course, the problem with me is that I simply stop / lose interest in this kind of thing after some time. Life happens, I backslide, etc. For some reason, I feel like this time is different, however (and that's not something I'm wont to always say). I think this is because I read The Hacker's Diet and gained an understanding and perhaps even a means to a goal. The other reason is the tracking here on this site: by developing the habit of recording my food intake and exercise, I encourage myself to both eat healthy and make progress and be consistent in my exercise. One of the (albeit childish) things that I enjoy about this is the game aspect of "Challenges" here. It's almost like getting XP in an RPG and moving up to the next level. I find having this structure quite helpful. I'm also introducing mind hacks into the flow of things. For a couple of years now if I wanted a nap after a hike on the weekend, I'd turn on http://napsounds.com and enjoy a 20-minute respite (I've found it to be quite effective). After stumbling upon Neuro-Programmer 3, learning about it and testing it out, I realise now that napsounds.com is a focused version of this "brainwave entrainment", and that I can use the principle for more than just falling asleep and waking back up. I can use it to program myself. Program myself to be inclined to lose weight and work out: even give myself energy. It's my hope that though surgical use of this tool, I can reduce the hold that my less than helpful habits and patterns have on me, and stay the course in this endeavor.
