About Me
Reached middle-age (40+), am the fittest I've been, and am addicted to lifting weights. One dream is to show my wife I have a 6-pack. Dream on! No actually, I just want to get stronger, fitter, stronger, ... I have a dear wife, 2 sons and I want to live to see their children grow older... And I have finally discovered something sporty in life I am quite good at. For more than 30 years I avoided all sports, etc. Now, I LOVE lifting heavy cast iron weights, push-ups, etc. What is wrong with me???

25th May - KNACKED!
Only a few words - I managed a SHOULDER session after a 10minute row this morning. It was before I appreciated how much the deadlifts (and the previous day's back session) had affected me. As I sit here tonight, my back aches from the middle upwards, my triceps, chest, etc., just ache/hurt. Only my legs appear okay! C'est la vie.

24th May - HOT SUMMER'S DAY... DEADLIFT DAY?
Finally the summer has arrived. It was sunny and hot today (whilst I was stuck inside). Compare this to the weekend in Rutland where I was in a fleece and a jacket... After the gruelling BACK session last night I wasn't in tip-top condition for DEADLIFTS today. But I proceeded. And I did manage a 205kg (451lbs) deadlift followed by 2 sets of 3 reps at 185kg (407lbs). Not content with that I then decided to try some SUMO DEADLIFTS again after a very long lay-off. I just did 3 sets of 5 reps at 60kg (132lbs), 100kg (220lbs) and 140kg (308lbs). Not too shabby. Quite pleased but boy am I aching tonight from the exertion of this week. And I was meant to be doing shoulders tomorrow. Got home late tonight due to work just in time to make our dinner again! Tonight was the other 1/2 of the cous-cous with salad drizzled with olive oil. My wife had some mackerel whereas I cooked up a rib-eye steak. And very nice it was to :o). She is out (again) tomorrow night so I will treat myself to another rib-eye steak with high fat melted cheese and salad me thinks. I am gradually reducing the carb intake and upping the (saturated) fat content. Let's see what journey that takes me on.

23rd May - BACK with the BOYS
Had a BACK session with Jay tonight. Matt turned up but cannot do back as he has an arm injury. And Seb was late. Still had a good one. DUMBBELL PULLOVERS - me doing 8 reps with 40kg (88lbs) - not bad as I haven't done them for a while. Then CHINS and PULL-UPS, some MACHINE D/BELL ROWING up to 60kg (132lbs) per side and some other stuff. FInished off with a 10min stint on the rowing machine - knackering. All in all pretty good. Got home in time to prepare the dinner! Tonight we had some cous-cous (1/2 the amount we normally have) with butter, salmon, and salad with olive oil. I Have decided to up my FAT intake - but only "healthy" fats such as animal fat, fish oil, olive oil. ANd start reducing my carb intake gradually. Let's see what happens...

22nd May - FOOD FOR THOUGHT
I am reading a book entitled "TRICK AND TREAT" written about the diet a majority of us are on and why there is a massive increase in cancers, and other illnesses these days. Very interesting to see how the statistics are manipulated. I'm halfway through the book but it does lend credence to a few things I do. e.g. I don't eat margarine - I eat butter. I also use a lot of olive oil and eat a lot of oily fish. All I need to do is curb my carb intake (rice, pasta, bread, oatmeal, cereals, potatoes, etc) and eat more meat and saturated fats. Erm... Sounds like the Atkkin's Diet to me? I'll continue reading and see what conclusions to draw. In the mean time I had a 2 session gym day today. A new BENCH PRESS 1RM for me for the last 12 months - I managed 110kg (242lbs). 12 months ago I managed 115kg (253lbs) x 1. Also managed a 10minute row over 2.4km which notched a new PB for me. Tonight's session was a LEG session - couldn't get on the squat rack so I leg-pressed and then did some hack squats but facing forward. All in all, an OK workout. I was still suffering from my weekend away. I went away with Ian to (belatedly) celebrate his 50th birthday. We stayed 2 nights in a Rutland pub enjoying the beer and food plus squeezed a 17 mile walk in around Rutland Water - the reservoir. Let's just say I was a wee bit tired plus have 2 large blisters on the soles of my feet. So no gym for me yesterday as I was too darn tired. Feet are recovering so I had a double session.

16th May - ANIMALS!
Speaking to Brett and Phil at the Gym today - they are strong lads, believe me!. They were leg-pressing 17 plates aside - i.e. a total of 34 plates x 20kg = 680kg (1500lbs) for reps. After that, Phil then squatted 200kg (440lbs) for reps. Animals! But really nice and friendly family men. I was struggling with my bench pressing - peaked at 105kg (231lbs) - just doing single reps mind you. Finished off with 16 reps at 70kg (154lbs). Tonight after I got home from work, I have been painting (started at 7pm) and then had to cook my own dinner. Finally sat down at 9pm to eat. Yes, you've guessed, my wife is out tonight with the ladies.
