Thanks for the advice!
Cheers - thats some really good info you've given me and I'll definitely check out the website - is it just for Ironman distance or all kind of tri distances? I'm starting with an Olympic length and don't know how far I will work up to (an Ironman is a pretty intimidating prospect!). What kind of length do you do? It's a bit difficult for me as I'm competing in the east coast college road cycling races for the whole of march and april so my training is going to be pretty cycling specific for the next 3 or 4 months, fitting in swim and runs wherever possible - as well as learning how to "properly swim" (turning my head from side to side for each stroke of freestyle isn't going to cut it...). In that sense I may have to drop out quite a bit of weight training (down to max 1 session a week) just to fit everything in. My main aim is also to really drop the fat and gain lean muscle mass (I've been overweight for far too long so I'm really pleased I'm now "normal" BMI but want to get rid of the rest of my fat) for which I think more and more cardio would certainly be a good idea. I'll keep you posted on how my progress goes!
