Tracking the Lead Metric, not the Lag

There's a secret to weight loss, and I've only just learned it, at least in a way that finally makes sense to me. Here's the secret: focus on the LEADING metrics, not the LAGGING metrics. Lagging metrics measure what you really want; in this case, to weigh less. The problem is, by the time you step on the scale, it's too late to do anything about it - you already weigh that much. These are "Oh Crap" metrics - as in, "Oh crap, it's too late to do anything about this." Contrast this with Leading metrics. A leading metric has two qualities, according to the Covey Institute's 4 Disciplines of Execution. First, it's predictive - that is, it has a relationship that ties to the lagging metric. Second, it's influenceable - that is, you can do something about it. In the case of weight loss, there are two great lead metrics we have available to us through daily burn. The first metrics is Calories consumed, and the second is Calories burned. They will predict the scale's answer when you step on it, and you can do something about them. Oh, why does Covey call them "disciplines"? Because they're easy to understand, and really hard to do. (Or the whole weight loss industry would go out of business.)

    Today Not a Good Day

Today was off - the whole day, really. Not enough focus, not enough progress, too many calories. Pulled it out at the end with progress on the running, but still - need to figure out where I went wrong today.
