About Me
I live outside Reno, NV, and I have the dreaded desk job at a big casino, admin for the Security Department. It's not usually particularly stressful and sometimes it's really interesting, and my bosses are the best. But it does mean that I spend a lot of time sitting, so I've struggled with my weight for years. I've done a few of the crazy things like Atkins, but nothing ever worked long-term so now I'm trying to just balance what I eat with how much I move, and let it happen more naturally. My hobbies include travel to the tropics (when I can afford it) to scuba dive, reading, bird watching, and fly fishing. I'm learning to cook now, too. One of my dreams is to travel to Italy, and I'd like to see Ireland and Scotland someday.

HRM and calorie burn; first Chi Run of the year
I've come to the conclusion that while my Heart Rate Monitor may be quite accurate at tracking my HR, it's seriously over-estimating my calorie burn. I wish I'd burned 530 calories during my Ripped in 30 workout this morning! However... realistically - no way. So I'm going to use it to ensure that I stay within my range, and let DB do the calorie calculations. My first run of the year, and I was sure I'd be doing intervals. Nope! Cruised through a mile rather easily, then went another quarter. Very pleased!

Trying something new
A few days ago I bought a Jillian Michaels DVD, "Ripped in 30", and tried it for the first time this morning. I like her 3-2-1 concept of rotating through strength, cardio and abs workouts, and it kept my heartrate up very efficiently. There's also a pretty realistic diet plan included with the program. I'm going to give it a shot starting on Sunday, working some of my own meal preferences in as long as they fall within the calorie guidelines. This means that I won't be doing my normal strength routines for awhile, but I'll still do my power walks in the park, because I really enjoy them and they keep me sane... even when the paths are icy like they were today. I'm also going to start working in some bike rides and Chi Running, starting with intervals.

Not as bad as I had feared.
Stress and depression resulted in a serious IDGAS attitude yesterday, but my weight didn't bounce up as much as I had figured. I've got to start insisting on carving out time for myself every day, no matter what my family needs (which is one reason I'm up so early...)

Rough weekend
Spent yesterday with my Dad, who's pushing 90 and doesn't move around much, so I didn't get any exercise in at all and ate poorly (he rarely gets pizza, I gave in...) Today hasn't turned out much better, with more family stuff and being away from home most of the day again. Funny how I actually have more time and opportunity to make progress during the work week!
