    Progress

On my last (second) 16.5 mile run, my knee started to hurt around mile 14. While i finished the run okay, later that day and the next day my knee hurt pretty bad. I'm sure it's the tendons given where the pain is originating from. I've been adding extra stretches and a few exercises to help. I also ran last weeks 12mile with a knee band. I believe that helped, but it still hurt a little afterwards as it does during my shorter training runs. I'm going out of town on vacation for the week and I'll miss running with the group for the 18mile run. I interested to see how running the 18 miles will go on my own in an area and state I'm not use to. ---- Recent purchases: Running Hydration belt (since I'll have to take my fluids w/ me on my vacation run) and a Garmin 405cx gps watch. I LOVE this running watch... wish I would have gotten it when I started training this season. Mentally beginning to prepare for the 20mile run in a few weeks.

    First 16 Mile run

This weeks long training run with the marathon group was a first for me at a NON STOP 16miles long. This was a good run for me. I kept a good steady pace and was the first time I've EVER felt my legs get tired *while* running. Because I was tired, I couldn't seem to run or work hard enough to keep my heart rate as high as I wanted. It just felt like I was out of energy. I started to feel the drain about mile 14 and by the end, it was just my drive keeping me going. The run was mentally frustrating and physically exhausting, however I feel fine today aside from being a little soar. I've started running with 2 other girls in my marathon group who are running just about my same pace. It really helps to have someone running with you. When you're behind you tend to stick with that person and use them as your anchor, and when you're in front you don't want to let them down (or make it easy on them... lol?). I have a feeling that 20mile'r is going to kick my butt in a few weeks....

    New Shoes

Picked up a second pair of running shoes this weekend to alternate in my training. I calculated that my current pair of shoes will reach the end of their running life(450miles) right about the time of the marathon. Rather then risk injury, I took the advice of a few other runners and got another pair to alternate with on running days. This should help keep me in the safe zone and injury free up too and during the marathon. I REALLY enjoy the new Brooks Glycerin 8 shoes; they just seem like the perfect comfortable shoe for me personally.

    Speedwork

Did some speed-work runs with the local running group today. It was a humbling experience to run with such a talented group of people where distance wasn't the main goal of the run. I can tell I have a lot of room for improvement. Rest day tomorrow.

    Shin Splints update.

I ran a 7.3mph moving average for today's 7.68 mile run. Yesterdays short 3 mile run went good as well. Ibuprofen, ice packs, and compression bandage during down time seemed like it did the trick to nurse my shin splint away. The run felt good and I had a lot of energy left at the end. Today's Saturday run marks the last single digit long run in the training program(w/ exception of a 10K race in 2 weeks). Marathon... here I come!
