About Me
Hi, my name's Mike and I'm a sedentary piece of scum. But that's all about to change. Oh yes.

Level up
For the first time since I started this triathlon nonsense, I went to the gym and it all felt dramatically easier. Not sure exactly what's changed but I cruised to 13.5km on the bike and it's the first time I've felt like I wouldn't have hit a brick wall by 20km. My pace was basically the same as it always was, but it felt leisurely compared to even two days ago. I'm going to choose to believe it's because I went so soon after the last time and try and exercise every other day.

Pool me once...
Did my first chunk of proper swimming today in years and I'm pretty pleased with the results. My form is terrible, but I was able to keep churning away for 1.2km without too much trouble and it only took around 45 minutes. Best of all, when I got out it was my arms and shoulders that felt weary rather than my legs, which bodes well for the bike section. Obviously open water is going to be more energy sapping, but I may be able to improve my swimming technique to reduce the amount of wasted energy too. Feeling really positive about today's achievement, particularly after the festival of calories that is the Christmas period.

Back in the saddle
So, no turning back now. The Triathlon is booked and it's time to start stepping up my game. The current plan is to add 500 metres to my each exercise each time I go. It'll be interesting to see whether these are small enough increments to avoid hitting some kind of brick wall. It's all a bit of a voyage of discovery at the moment.

The Social Networkout
Saw The Social Network tonight, so in honour of Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss I raced from the cinema straight to the gym and managed to smash out 20 minutes of rowing before they closed. Did 4km in 19m 35s. Unlikely to make Harvard Row Crew, but I'll take it...
