Muskogee's Journal
The 162-168 Trap
I keep gaining and losing these same 6 lbs! Looking at my chart right now is so frustrating. I am going to work as hard as I can to break through to 155. I'm worried about the trip to Chicago (2 1/2 days for work), but if I can make it through that, I think I can get through this stalled time.

Small scale study on dieting
http://www.sustainlane.com/reviews/thinking-about-food-makes-you-want-it-less-study-says/USDJJZTWVHW98XCSTTU7VS7NVO3A . I heard this study mentioned on the radio last week, and it is helping me survive the holidays. As an emotional eater, I am essentially obsessed with food. When I am not dieting, I tend to spend an embarrassing amount of time between meals thinking about what I will eat next and how soon I can eat it. One of my biggest challenges with dieting is how to stop thinking about the food I want. After reading this article, I changed my method. I now think in great detail about the food I want. I visualize myself eating A LOT of that food. I visualize very carefully, thinking about changing textures, sounds, and smells of that food. After awhile, the craving goes away, and I actually have some time without food on my mind. Thinking about food more intently is leading to me obsessing about food less often.

Checking In
Finishing up day 22 of a low-carb diet. I wouldn't usually suggest low-carb to anyone, but this method is working well for me. I am an emotional eater to a very large extent, and almost all the food I would go to for emotional support are very high in carbs. Rewiring myself to eat for sustenance rather than comfort is helping my weight to go down, my energy level to go up, and my stress level to decrease. ~~ About two weeks in I had a surprising crash in energy level. I started taking one-a-day vitamins. Either the vitamins helped or I just needed to push through those two days, because I'm doing much better. Life is good.

Things to do when I feel like eating...
Have a healthy snack. Chew gum. Paint my nails. Exercise. Read. Cut my hair. Drink a glass of water. Have a diet soda. Write a letter to a friend. Go through old pictures. Change clothes. Go for a walk. Call a friend. Brush my teeth. Make my bed. Check my progress.
