    I envy your weather

It is already pushing 80 here. I miss the winter. I have similar knee problems to yours. One knee has been scoped the other was scoped once and totally rebuilt about 3 years ago. Once more injury and I am looking at total replacement. So far I am up to short sprints(6-10mph) mixed with fast walking (4 mph). it is sooo... slow... but if that is what it takes, I will tough it out. I love running. When people used to ask me, "why do you run?" i would anwer, "How can you not run?"

Just rode my bike again after my spring tune-up. Man, those guys did a great job - and it was free, too. :) Did 15.4 miles. Would have done more, but it was freezing out.

We're having a bake sale at school this week... and, well, I can't sell delicious cookies if I don't know that they're delicious, right? I had two cookies about the size of my palm. They're date cookies from Dimpflmeir, and if you guys are in the GTA area I highly recommend them. They're not overly sweet or greasy, and are soft not because of chemical softeners but because someone made them a couple of hours ago. I know, I know, I should have baked something, but I have barely any time in the evening and I'd probably just eat the batter... :P Argh. Oh well. I just have to stick to my pl/an to eat healthier for the rest of the day, and go to the gym tonight. Whooo.

In which I give myself a pep talk.

I just came back from the perfect run. I didn't time it. I didn't really care. It wasn't a long run - only about 5k, if that - and it wasn't a tough run either. It was at ten o clock at night, in the rain, and it was just beautiful. Yes, I had to stop and walk once or twice, but instead of feeling awful about it I just kind of rolled with it and didn't stay walking for long. I jumped over trash cans and ran lamppost sprints (sprint between two lights, jog, sprint, jog, each sprint/jog is one set. Repeat x5, then walk for one light, then do another set of 5 pairs). I felt like an athlete again, and that was really nice, because I've been feeling awful - me with these extra twenty pounds and slow times and wimpy-ass workouts. But the fact is that my body's changed, and my life has changed, and I can't keep wishing that things are different. I am likely not going on the track team, not because I'm a crappy runner, but because I just finished that last tapering-off of swim season and now there's a short gap right before water polo starts. And that's okay. What I need are more runs like this one: No worries, no judgment, just one foot in front of the other. I remember back when I could run a 5k in 19 minutes and change - not a great time, but not bad for a teenage girl at an art school - and people asked me why I ran. I told them that it wasn't really that hard, that yes, it hurt, but really it was all just head games. You just have to distract your brain long enough for your feet to move you across the distance. Your body knows what to do; we've been running since we crawled out of the primordial ooze. You just kind of have to let it go. I'm starting from square one and I think I'm finally okay with that.

    Ellipitical

I hear what you are saying about the elliptical being lame. IT isn't like running and it is harder to get the same workout. Still, I can put more miles in that way without my knee hurting and swelling. I am not sure what kind of injury you are recovering from, but I have knee hip and back trouble, so running without impact is becoming a necessity for my old joints. To make it worth the effort, I have to really push the speed. Crank up the resistance to 4 or 5 or 7 for a start, then crank it up and do your HIIT intervals.

About Me

Used to be a competitive runner and swimmer. Well, still am, but I got hurt about a year ago and now, after a year of whining physio, and feeling generally awful, I'm ready to move on with my life and get my head out the fridge. The comeback will be EPIC. I love running, swimming, cycling, water polo, and rugby. I'm also biggest nerd you'll ever meet. Come and say hi.
