    Back to Building

Today marks the start of a new weight-gain cycle (just completed about 3 weeks of a weigh-loss cycle ... didn't do a great job of updating my logs on this site, resolved to do better moving forward). Had my first weight-gain workout this afternoon (chest), it was great! I was really pleased to see that I've maintained my strength, although I did lose a little muscle mass while I was on the weight-loss plan.

The order of exercises IS important

I guess I already knew this, but today ... proof! The deadlift area was occupied when I arrived (by a guy who sure took his time finishing up), so I did two other exercises first - chin-ups and barbell preacher curls. I really felt both in my forearms (in addition to the intended areas). Then, after I started doing the deadlift, I found I was having a hard time just keeping my grip on the bar. My fingers kept going slightly slack, and I could feel the bar slipping. I had to cut my reps short on the last two sets lest I drop the bar altogether. I think I exhausted my forearms with the first two exercises, which impacted my ability to maintain a firm, steady grip. Yikes! Who knew? Next time: Deadlift first, no matter what.

    Lost 2 lbs

Hmm. DailyBurn is congratulating me, but since my goal is to gain weight, it's not such a good thing. On the other hand, I can't remember the circumstances of my original weighing. Did I do it first thing in the morning, after using the restroom? Was I already dressed at the time? All those things could make a difference. Maybe I was carrying more water weight for the original weighing, and today's is a more accurate figure? For future reference, today I weighed myself first thing in the morning, after using the bathroom, before putting on any clothes or eating/drinking anything. Alas. As long as my overall weight goes up over time (weeks and months), it will be fine. I'll give it another week, and then decide if I need to change my daily calorie goal.
